dvd/cd drives

copied from another post…

Has anyone had this problem, and fixed it. Please help.

I have 2 dvd/multi drives. Both of which is having the same problem. I am having trouble opening the trays, i have to push the eject button 20 or more times before the tray decides to open.

I know it is a linux problem because both drives work fine under windows xp.

The only time I can see my dvd/rom drive is when i have a cd in the drive. I always try to keep a cd in the tray at all times so I wont have that eject problem. I keep some form of cd in the tray at all times otherwise my dvd/rom doesn’t show up.

I actually hoped that by upgrading from 10.3 to 11.0 that my cd problems would solve themselves. I guess I am not going to be that lucky.

I did however figure out a new way to open my CD trays, I’m using a paper clip.

I set up an external dvd drive just to test for differences. It behaved just as my original two.

My original dvd-roms is one internal one external. They did behave properly under openSuse of the past, they stopped behaving with openSuse 10.3 and 11.0.

whom can i take this question to that might be able to give me an answer

what is a dvd/multi drive? (DVD/CD or something else?)

the button push does not (afaik) have to or need to go thought the
software to open the drive’s caddie…

i’ve used Linux for years and never ever seen this problem on any of
my machines OR ever heard of it happening before…ever.

is this a desktop? open the case and you will see that the CD/DVD
drives are connected to the motherboard by a flat wide multi-stranded
cable…AND connected to the power supply by a smaller, fatter
wire…with the computer shut down, unhook one or both drives from the
motherboard (it may be easer to unplug them AT the motherboard…just
depends on your machine…

then, with the power plugs still attached, and the drives COMPLETELY
isolated from the software (via the motherboard) push the drive
button…what happens?

boy, i’ve never heard that before!

that is exactly the way it is SUPPOSED to work…if it is empty there
is no need to “see it”…pop a disk in and MAGIC, it is there ready to
serve…

> I always try to keep a cd in the tray at all times so I wont have

leave it EMPTY unless you are using a disk…to do other wise keeps it
‘active’ and the OS, BIOS, every thing has to keep an “eye” on
it…that is, it is soaking up resources, memory, and more for
NOTHING…just so you can open the drawer IF you need to…

and, i’m gonna guess if you leave it empty, and press the button ONCE
and manage to pause ONE second, the drawer will open…but, if push
the button every one tenth second you constantly INTERRUPT its
internal workings and it CAN’T open

don’t do that…(for the reasons mentioned above)

nope, 'cause i don’t think you actually HAVE a problem…i think you
are seeing normal behavior…

yep, they talk about that in the user manual that came with the
drive…have you read it?

as it should…

things change with progress…there WAS a time when you NEVER saw a
DVD or CD until you MANUALLY mounted it (from a command line) or
stuck it in fstab or maybe mtab or maybe i forget…and it had to be
unmounted and blah blah blah…

but then PROGRESS came and now you can open the drawer, drop in a disk
and a pretty menu opens in the middle of the screen and asks what you
wanna do with that disk (play music, burn with KB3, etc etc etc) when
all that automatic magic came then the cd/dvd always showing up
changed…progress…buy into it, it makes life easier…

interesting video on progress, have a look:

It is now obvious that this is a too tough of a question for anyone to answer. I wont waste anymore of my time here.

Having a similar problem in openSUSE 11.1…with my iMac G5.

Is there a command that will force a cd/dvd to eject?

My bluetooth keyboard “eject” button doesn’t seem to work?

> Is there a command that will force a cd/dvd to eject?

this may be hard to remember, so you might wanna write it down
somewhere…try this, put in a CD/DVD, open a terminal, type in

eject

and gently press the enter key…
then you may type

man eject

and see all the other cool stuff you can do (IF your drive supports
it) like you can also open the drive from the keyboard with the eject
command…

cool huh?
