DVD burner not detected as 'user' but 'root' can

There was a post in the archives that dealt with the same topic - but it never seem to reach a solution, so I will try. I have 10.3 Gnome and trying to burn an iso using K3B. As ‘user’ K3B can’t find the drive - though a blank disk will show up on the desktop when inserted (automount?) If I log in as ‘root’ K3B sees the DVD drive and I can burn the iso.
So why? Following the archived post I run

planb:/home/stephen # resmgr dump

Loged in as ‘user’ I thought I would run…

But if I run …

stephen@planb:~> k3b
kdeinit: Aborting. No write access to ‘/home/stephen/.ICEauthority’.
stephen@planb:~>

is the ‘no write access’ the reason that I can’t burn as ‘user’ and how to fix?

Thank you

Here http://linux.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists/SuSE/2008-05/msg01902.html you can find someone with the same problem. -I hope this is not the archive you are refering to-

Here is what I found in the follow up of the message (the list of replies in the mailing list is a little messed up):

I used konqueror to change the group permissions for sr0 and sg1 and now k3b no longer complains

this is the output from user console :-
davepl@Arbuthnot:~> getfacl /dev/sr0
getfacl: Removing leading ‘/’ from absolute path names

file: dev/sr0

owner: root

group: disk

user::rw-
user:davepl:rw-
group::r–
mask::rw-
other::—

And this is after I changed device permissions back to how they were when I had the problem:-
davepl@Arbuthnot:~> getfacl /dev/sr0
getfacl: Removing leading ‘/’ from absolute path names

file: dev/sr0

owner: root

group: disk

user::rw-
user:davepl:rw- #effective:r
group::r–
mask::r–
other::—

Don’t know if this applies to your problem…

Btw: This makes me remind of a problem I once had with my NVIDIA graphics card, which only was able to generate 3D images for root. At that time, I guess it was still SuSe 9.x, there existed a file /etc/logindevperm, where you could set the permissions for each piece of hardware. However, this file seems not to exist anymore… Does anyone know why?

Funny … when I run getfacl /dev/sr0
I get (in terminal window as user)

getfacl: Removing leading ‘/’ from absolute path names

file: dev/sr0

owner: root

group: disk

user::rw-
group::r–
other::—

and if I run the same command in a terminal window as ‘root’ I get the same

I wonder if I should change the group permission for dev/sr0 using Nautilus to rw-
