Duplicate entries in the start menu

Hello, first of all , I’d like to say as a Windows user my whole life, I have recently made the switch to linux and I am in love. The security and customization has sold me already! lol!

I am currently running openSuse 11.1 with the KDE 4.1 User Interface. Up until a couple of days ago things were running fine until I had one minor snag up. I am getting duplicate program entries in the application launcher (start menu). I’, not sure why this has started happening and if there is a way to remove these entries and also a way to prevent this from happening again.

welcome…happy to have you aboard…if you like 4.1 just wait until
you dump that puppy for 4.2 (or 4.3 just around the corner)…will
take patience, understanding and luck, but can try:

4.2 at

Brassy, I am taking your advice and updating to kde 4.2 then I’ll make the plunge into 4.3… How far does the rabbit hole go? (god that was so lame I may have just made myself blush)

After the upgrade to 4.2 should I do a restart before going to 4.3? Or does it make a difference?

reboot no [one of the big differences here is there are a lot less
reboots required]…

restart KDE yes…do that by right click on desktop, log out, then end
current session, then log back in…

and, just to make it clear: i’m not recommending you chase the rabbit
to the bottom of the hole, because that will NEVER come…it is
constantly changing…

NO, instead you asked about duplicate entries in your menu…that was
one of MANY MANY different ‘little’ bugs in 4.1 and i just thought
instead of you suffering through them all, just dump 4.1 and move on…

in my most humble opinion, the WORST thing you can do is keep the old
microsofties habit of always wanting to have the LATEST AND
GREATEST…which was kinda ok when something big happened once every
two or four years…

stuff happens here EVERY day…chase it and you will be forever
having little troubles…

for example: when 11.0 came out with KDE4.0 it sucked…i saw that and
i’m STILL waiting for it to settle down…and, i run 10.3 and KDE3.5,
and LOVE the stability and lack of ‘little’ bugs…

in my opinion a computer should be used and not constantly in the
flux of updating! (but, if you wanna do that you can here!)

Well, I added the repo and began the update… and then… KAZZZAAAAM … Lots of stuff went crazy. When I’d open a window I couldn’t move it, my networkmanager would not open plus every now and then my keyboard would fail to work. I just did off another live cd with kde 4.2 on it and I think I’m gonna coast around here until I am more knowledgeable.
