Duplex & Complex Print Options in Thunderbird

Hi,

I hope the Suse-heads can help where the Mozilla folks can’t. I moved over from WinXP, same printers. For some reason, I can’t print both sides (duplex) or select staple options in Linux, but these options work in Windows. Forgetting the stapelling (there’s a printer driver), the duplex printing should be there. Simple option - HP2200dt printer. Print both sides. How about selecting paper bins - available in XP, not available in Linux. The printer options in the Linux versions are very limited.

You have to install the hplip packages from Packman. They contain the full driver version from HP and the HP toolbox. Im my case these usually give me more control than the windows drivers. Duplex printing works for me.

Yes, not all advanced options are available. But duplex printing works for
me.

I am using firefox 3.0.10 and the HP’s PPD file for my printer. When I
select this printer to print a page in firefox I can see an option under
File / print / page setup / duplex printing (one side / long-edge /
short-edge). I select “long-edge”, et voilà, the output is the expected.

Make sure you have the duplex unit enabled in Cups (printer options):

Greetings,

Thanks to both Knurpt and Cameleon. I installed the packages and prints perfectly in Firefox. But, for some reason, I get very limited printing options in Thunderbird. Do you know any way to get the same range of options in Thunderbird as in Firefox? In Thunderbird, I get no printing choices.

Thanks

Oh, sorry

I was thinking in Firefox, not Thunderbird.

Well, yes, Thunderbird printing options seems even worse than Firefox :-/

Tip/workaround: create another printer with cups, same you did with
HP2200dt. Just call it “hp2200dtDUPLEX” and set in this printer (as default
option) the double-side printing (long-edge) and choose this printer in
Thunderbird whenever you want to print in both-sides.

Hmm, interesting question, I never thought of it before because I so seldom print my email. So I went looking. It looks like they haven’t ported the full set of options in Firefox printing to Thunderbird. (Looks like some needed functionality here.) But I saw that someone wrote up a workaround by sending the output to kprinter instead of using the default builtin routines. This assumes you are using KDE.

How To: Make Firefox / Thunderbird print to kprinter automatically in KDE / Kubuntu [Archive] - Ubuntu Forums

I haven’t tried it out, maybe you can report on how it goes.

That article worked like a charm. Thanks for the help!
