I´ve posted this question also in the german forum, but did not get an answer so far. This is why I post it here again.
I have a new Laptop “Acer Aspire V3” with Windows 8. I know - from the Internet - that there are difficulties, if you would like to install a dualboot with another OS.
Nevertheless: Does anybody have any experiences with this?
What I found out so far:
In my BIOS it is possible to switch off the UEFI. Then there is “Legacy BIOS”.
Windows 8 does not start anymore. After turning it on, Win 8 starts again.
It is not possible to turn off the “Secureboot”.
Could this be a way to install openSuse with Win 8?
By the way: Is it possible to do a Dualboot with Windows 7? (Until now I only did this with XP.)
Fortunately there are computers that let you disable the secure boot option. lol!
UEFI firmwares differ a lot in order to the options and the menus available.
Now more than ever, it’s very important to choose the right machine … :\
Here is an information about, what I have done so far:
After an “Update” to BIOS Version 3.7 from acer, it is possible to turn on “Legacy BIOS” an to turn off "Secure Boot"lol!! So far, so good!
Now I´ll try do go on with installing openSuse. But this has to wait a little while, because of other works, I have to do in the next weeks. But I will return with a (hopefully!) solution.
For information: The Laptop is an Acer Aspire V3 771 G. BIOS Version (now) 3.7, which allows changing bootsettings.
That’s good news to hear, Ojio, and should help others in the future with a similar problem.
I recall reading an article on Phoronix about a possible intermediate bootloader as a solution for secure boot. I’ll have to poke around and see if I can find it again.
Today is my first day ever using Linux, and I am dual-booting with a newly built PC under Windows 8.
Configuration includes:
Intel G2120
ASRock B75G-DGS Mainboard Rev. 1.01
Patriot G2 Series DDR3 1333MHZ memory - 8 GB
Microsoft Windows 8 64-bit System Builder
One reason I may not be having the advertised problem is that I passed on ASRock’s Windows 8 BIOS upgrade. The instructions say not to get it if your PC is OK, and, at least on the Windows 8 side, it is completely OK.
On the Linux side, I am walking what is probably a normal newbie learning curve, and have already been helped on another thread. I don’t sense that Windows 8 is particularly problematic. One problem I am having at the moment is inability to get the Firefox windows bigger than the left half of the screen. However Konqueror is OK.
Is it possible to make the default dual boot choice Windows instead of OpenSuse?

please don’t place a new question totally unrelated to the previous
thread (except that you too are dual booting with Win8) and, i say that
not because you have broken some rule (we hid from you) but rather that
it is likely your specific question could be completely overlooked by
the wandering herd of potential helpers…
almost always best in these forums to first search for the answer to
your question, and if failing to find it, then begin a new thread with a
descriptive subject line…in this case something like:
switch to default boot openSUSE rather than Win8?
which i will now attempt to answer though i can only barely spell Win8:
next time you boot, when you see the first green screen press the down
arrow (or up arrow, or left etc–all it does is stop the clock from
counting down and continuing the boot)
now, use the up/down arrow keys to select the Windows you wish to boot…
next time it will (i think) boot what you booted last time…
if that doesn’t work, start your new thread … (and someone will give
you the right info)
HI, IM also a new windows 8 laptop owner and wish to get my loved openSuse installed.
I got an HP envy m6 series.
I was able to disable uefi and go back to legacy. I also formatted the disk and tried my hardest to get windows 7 installed on it and be rid of this windows 8, but was unsuccessful. I was faced with a finished install and then cannot configure to run on this hardware error. But this is not why I am here. I scratched the windows 7 and went back to windows 8 to give it a chance, So I blanked the disk and let windows 8 create its two partitions it wanted to for install, leaving the rest un partitioned. I am in legacy BIOS mode at this point.
The windows install went fine. I then booted to the openSuse 12.2 install “DVD” to give that a go. A first I was greeted by a partitioning error. I was un able to partition my un partitioned space.
SO I booted back into my Windows 8 Install CD and partitioned the rest of the disk using that. I set aside 25GB for /, and 400ish for /home. I wasnt able to create a swap because its partitioned wouldn’t allow me to create an extended partition. So now I have 4 primary partitions.
I boot back into the openSuse 12.2 DVD and set up and format both the 25GB and 400ish GB partitions and install openSuse 12.2.
After the install I had no Grub or nothing linux related. All I had was a bootable windows 8. It seems maybe Grub was unable to install itself?
So after describing what I have gone through, can anyone suggest anything I can do to get this installed and booting and partitioned with a swap, etc?

It would be better if you posted a new thread.

At this point we want to know “why”.

Is this not a Dual boot windows 8 and openSuse thread? Am I not trying to do this very thing? Why would a new thread be needed?
At this point we want to know “why”.
If I knew the answer to this question I most likely would not be here asking for help dual booting. This is after all why I am here, because i do not know “why”.

Because the problem originally posted here was solved, and because it
creates confusion. It is the custom in these parts.

Yes, you do. You got a “partitioning error”, but you are keeping a
secret. >:-)

Interesting. Not UEFI it seems. Let us know how you manage to get new
applications for win8.

For the record, I agree that I should have started a new thread for a question like how to change the boot order. It was a lazy question anyway, as a little googling showed that it is explained how to do it, via the YaST GUI, in Section 10.3 of the OpenSUSE 12.2 Reference:

New software?

If it is to be taken literally, I just installed calibre 0.9.6 eReader software on my Win8 side, after having installed it yesterday, the day this was released to the public, in OpenSUSE. While it was an update for Windows, the update is really a full re-install.
One thing I am hoping to do in openSUSE is schedule the weekly calibre refreshes. I need these updates because of using features that pull news stories off of web sites, and the embedded scripts for specific news web sites often change.
