Graphics Card: AMD Radeon HD 6550D (integrated graphics, running A8-3850 CPU).
Old Monitor: Samsung 710N
New Monitor: AOC l2267WH
I am trying to setup dual monitors for my openSUSE 13.1 installation. I have installed the proprietry driver which was successful. When using ATI Catalyst Control centre and ‘detect’ monitors, it is only picking up the one.
I have an old VGA monitor and a newer HDMI monitor. Initially, I was using the original VGA monitor and then attached the newer HDMI one (whilst powered off). Booting up, the HDMI monitor was not detected, and the VGA worked as normal. I then powered off the computer and removed the VGA monitor. I powered the computer back on and the HDMI monitor is displaying correctly. It seems they can work in single monitor setups, but dual.
A quick google search suggests dual monitor setup with this graphics card is possible.
Not sure what else I can do, any help appreciated.
Up until a couple months ago, I was running the proprietary fglrx with 13.1/KDE, with dual monitors (one HDMI, one VGA).
I had set it up using AMDCCCLE, mostly.
Unfortunately, I found that after upgrade to the then most recent version of fglrx (Oct time frame), STR (Suspend to RAM) became flaky, failing to resume randomly, perhaps 1 in 3 to 5 resumes.
Blaming fglrx, I decided to move back to the open source radeon driver.
At the time, fglrx was not ready for 13.2, so that was also a motivator.
I am now running 13.2 and have decided to stick with radeon, it does all I need it to do.
So I no longer have access to AMDCCCLE and don’t recall specifically what I did to get both displays running.
I sort of recall some back and forth between AMDCCCLE and System Setting - Display and Monitor.
So it is possible - keep at it. Sorry I can’t be more precise.
Lets see if I can give some ideas. I’m using a AMD A-8 3850 (with built in HD 6550D GPU) as well on a ASUS F1-A75-V Pro motherboard using 2 monitors on 13.2 64 KDE and Catalyst drivers:
-21’ Fujitsu connected by VGA (D-sub)
-20’Samsung connected by DVI
with the Catalyst drivers.
Before I had a 19’ NEC multisync connected by VGA and the -21’ Fujitsu connected by DVI, working fine with 13.1 and the propriety Catalyst driver all the time. I have to use the Catalyst driver because with the radeon driver it didn’t work at all. I have to ctrl+2 and log in in text mode and install the Catalyst driver or boot whit only 1 monitor attached.
When I started to test out 13.2 I ran in to problems and some positive things. The radeon driver was working fine with 2 monitors until after the first zypper dup. Then the 19’ NEC multisync connected by VGA went black beacuse it went out of sync (GPU had decided on 75Mhz, but I could adjust this manually) and my computer didn’t remember this when rebooted so I change the NEC to the Samsung and trying:
-21’ Fujitsu connected by DVI
-20’Samsung connected by HDMI ->to DVI using a adapter.
Dident work at all, only one monitor worked. I found out why in my motherboard manual (ASUS F1-A75-V Pro)
So what advice can I give you? Do you have a DVI ->HDMI adapter to test with Or a DisplayPort ->HDMI adapter to test with? Check if your motherboard manual says what combinations can be used when using 2 monitors.
Thanks for your help! It would appear my motherboard does not support VGA + HDMI… I did suspect that may be the reason. I’ve ordered another monitor to connect to the DVI port on my motherboard which according to the manual, should work! Will let you know how it goes.
So… I have a new monitor and I have plugged in via HDMI - DVI D (in the manual it specifies this to be a working combination). I turned on the computer and I can see the BIOS screen on both screens, followed by the GRUB menu and then it reaches the openSUSE screen just before it runs through the icon loading part (where it’s loading the drivers I suspect?) and then poof. Both screens go black. I can remove the DVI D and it the desktop returns to the HDMI screen. This suggests openSUSE does not like something rather than the desktop itself.
Its always a nice idea to hit the “esc” button when its starts booting…
Do you still have catalyst proprietary drv installed? Boot up in … What ever it calls “safe mode” . Make sure you are root (su + password) Go to /usr/share/ati and:
sh amd-uninstall.sh
Reboot.
Or just boot with one monitor connected and go to (in a terminal/konsole) /usr/share/ati and:
Thanks, that was going to be last attempt after deciding to update to 13.2, to make sure I had the latest software. Once I updated that and rebooted, I added the AMD / ATI repository back. I checked for and installed the latest AMD / ATI updates. Attached the second monitor via DVI D and it picked up both monitors!
