I’m running KDE on SUSE 12.3. I was wondering if it is possible to install GNOME alongside and have the option of running either DKE at login. Or is this inadvisable? What is the alternative, install SUSE to another partition and run GNOME there? I love KDE, but a couple things are just a little dated. Also, what’s a nice, but quick, alternative for Kickoff?
I’m really loving openSUSE (after a couple preliminary hiccups). Honestly, of all the distributions I’ve recently tried (Fedora, Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, Gentoo, Pear and even FreeBSD), SUSE is my favourite! Debian is nice too, but still a ways behind. Manjaro looks clean, I might give that a run this week.

It is possible to run “n” number of desktops(kde,icewn,gnome,e17,qt
desktop etc) simultaneously provided they are installed the right way.
Using pattern based install is the best way to do it
to install gnome try and run the below command
su -
zypper in patterns-openSUSE-gnome
If the above command tries to remove kdm or something terminate the
installation as kdm is the login management system for KDE
Thanks, vazhavandan. The reason I made the thread is because I tried your suggestion, albeit using YAST > patterns, and it wouldn’t do it without removing KDE so I figured asking the community would help. I’m assuming you haven’t done it yourself?
I think it only wants to remove something like “kde-pure”. Sorry, I don’t have the exact name.
Removing that is harmless. I don’t think any actual software is removed.
I do it with install from the DVD. I routinely install KDE, Gnome, XFCE and LXDE. They all work.
I mostly use KDE, and occasionally experiment with the others. However, settings that you make in one desktop can affect other desktops, though usually not in a serious way.

Yes, it can be done - if you tell us what specific error messages you got
when you tried to do it, someone might be able to help you determine why
you’re having trouble with it.
You’re right. It wants to uninstall patterns-openSUSE-ked4_pure-12.3.7.10.1.x86_64 . Are you positive? I would hate to uninstall it only to have desktop problems, but if you’re certain I will give it a shot

I think you remove the kde4_pure package and try it, and if it doesn’t
work for some reason, you reinstall the kde4_pure package from the
command-line. It’s easy enough to undo the change if it seems to cause a
problem, but I would be surprised if it did.
The package in question is actually a pattern package, and the contents
of that package are text files in the /usr/share/doc directory, so
removing them won’t change any libraries or anything.
