Dual Booting help - Ubuntu - OpenSuse

Hello, I am currently using Ubuntu 8.10, I am downloading the DVD and I would like to be able to dual boot but I’ve never done it before, can someone advise me please.

Hi scouser73, welcome to the Forums.
I assume you have Ubuntu on the drive and hope to put openSUSE on it too. If you just make unpartitioned empty space on the drive, after the current installations/partitions, the Suse installer will take over and use that space and also incorporate Ubuntu into a new Grub multiboot menu. That’s about all that you need to prepare.

When you say

just make unpartitioned empty space on the drive
what do you mean by this?

I’m sorry, but I’m new to all of this and would really like to learn all I can.

The installer likes to find a part of the drive where there’s empty space, enough to install openSUSE on it. Usually this exists per chance on the end of the drive, beyond what’s already been used. Unless of course it was all used previously by Ubuntu (and perhaps windows). If it was all previously used, the installer will suggest to shrink what already exists there to make space. Is all the space on the first drive taken already?
