Dropbox doesn't work on plasma and no one gives a ****?

It is been a year that plasma just can’t have dropbox to work. Is it that the devs (of dropbox or kde or suse?) don’t care or they are incompetent?

I need to understand why it never works so to decide my next move.

Or it is just me?

Megasync can even have its tray icon sitting there fine.

works for me on leap 42.1.
what do you mean “it doesn’t work”?

Not a request for help, moving to soapbox!

Thread moved and open for err discussion…?

There is no tray icon of dropbox in every distro I have that uses plasma. I have read many solutions on the internet but they work for one day (with ugly icons) but the next day it disappears.

And on the kde forums many will not give you a solution but kindly indicates there are currently several bugs causing this. Not one bug, but several bugs can’t be solved at the moment it seems.

It has been a long time but it seems dropbox just won’t work on plasma.

It seems right to put this thread in soapbox cause I don’t foresee a solution can be given.

Funny part is I gave a try on megasync that I’m only testing, it works instantly.

Just because you cannot see the tray icon does not mean that drinks isn’t working. It should still be functioning just fine.
To get old style tray icons in plasma 5.4.2 or 5.4.3 you need xembed-sni-proxy
However, there may still be some things that prevent the icon loading, e.g. for me if I use fcitx this prevents the tray icon loading - but as already started, it doesn’t stop Dropbox from running and syncing successfully.
This is not just an opensuse problem but across all distros running plasma 5.
It’s something that really needs to be fixed up by Dropbox developers, but I have seen a statement from at least one developer that they don’t officially support KDE.

just because you can’t see the tray icon doesn’t mean it isn’t working. It should still be connecting and syncing successfully.
To view old style xembed icons in plasma 5.4.2 or 5.4.3 you need xembed-sni-proxy (in plasma 5.5 it is built in)
However, even with this there may be variables to your system that stop the tray icon loading . . . e.g. for me - if I use fcitx then this stops xembed icons loading.
It’s not just a problem in openSUSE but all distros that use plasma 5.
It’s something that is really up to dropbox to address - but I have seen a statement from at least one developer saying that they don’t officially support KDE.

Megasync works well in plasma but there is still no Dolphin support.
IN an email to me back in April they said they would have Dolphin support within two weeks. It still isn’t ready and about a month ago in another query they simply stated that they have been busy with other things of higher priority and it will be ready “in the near future”

Thanks for the input. So it seems it is the fcitx that won’t work with xembed.

I am not blaming suse for this problem, as on my manjaro system it doens’t work as well. So no support for KDE from dropbox, I now understand better the issue.

Megasync is just too good to be true, which kinda scares me…I have registered but can’t trust it as much as dropbox since I read people complained before that they lost all data somehow…

I got around the fcitx issue by switching to ibus. For the past few releases ibus had been flaky and fcitx solid but it seems the roles are reversed in leap. Ibus now seems much better integrated into KDE than fcitx.
