It is working now. It is giving sound on laptop speakers as well as external speakers if I use alsamixer instead of kmix. If I use kmix it is giving sound onto laptop speakers. Thanks for your posts.

Out of curiousity, for my own edification, what setting did you end up using for /etc/modprobe.d/sound (or did you put it back to a default setting ? ). ie what is the output of:cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound
