Downloading KDE3.5?

Greetings from Guelph. If one has installed OpenSuse 11.0 from the KDE4 live CD, is it possible to download a complete KDE 3.5 desktop to have as a session choice on login? I see many KDE 3.5 packages in the repos but I am not sure if the complete desktop is there. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am aware one can download the DVD with all desktops included, but I am trying to avoid such a large download. I would like to have KDE 3.5 as a comparison.
Thanks.

You can get it from the online repositories for sure

KDE/Repositories - openSUSE

go down to 3.5 KDE

KDE Core Packages will have the main stuff for KDE 3.5

The community stuff can have some nice additional packages, but you don’t need to have that on there either.

Install the base system first to get the core kde 3.5 stuff, then you can add programs after. For my install of base I just went to patterns as the YAst filter, then I did install of KDE3 base system.

It gives you the option of loading into KDE 3.5 from the login screen then.

Thank you so much! I am an experimenter and it is time again to change the desktop and drive my wife and daughter crazy. They never know what to expect when they boot up my Linux desktop!

Hei,

Yes you have the complete kde 3.5… in the online opensuse repo.
It is actually more complete than kde 4.0 which, I think, lack some configuration options as well as lacking several apps that hasn’t been ported yet: Amarok, K3b etc. However, if you like kde 4, you can use those missing apps through the kde 3 libs. Regarding how to change default desktop, I think you can change that in Yast Control Centre > System > /etc/sysconfig Editor. Have never done that so I am not sure where exactly, but look around, I have seen this topic described elsewhere on the forum. Another option is to log out and log in again to kde3, think the system will by default log in to the last used desktop.

Cheers

Yes, that is an option, to use the last used desktop on login.
