how do you go about downloading a network install for the opensuse? I’m new to this but I downloaded the dvd and it wouldn’t install and someone told me to try a network install but unsure about how to go about it. can anyone help? thanks…puzzled penguin…ya got that right…lol
Try the howtos in this section of this web page:
in particular Internet Installation. Some of the howtos are in need of updating so the exact details may be a little different now. Feel free to ask about anything mentioned in the howtos you are not sure about.

On our download page http://software.opensuse.org/ you’ll see your
architecture selection and a point to select DVD / LiveCD and Network
install. You want the latter.
Kind regards,

what do you do, download each file seperately then burn them to a dvd or what? I’m a big dummy when it comes to this. I’ll be happy to try any siggestions. thanks
Just download the NET CD (about 100MB) and burn that in image mode to a CD. The rest of the install will be fetched over the Internet by the installer.
Mind you, you didn’t say why your DVD install failed. There are a few steps you should follow. Perhaps it’s easier to fix the problems there rather than do a network install just because somebody said so. Did that person give a reason?
when I try to install the dvd, it goes into the setup screen then tells me it can’t find the repositories and when I try to go back, it gives me the options to install via ftp or http. then it asks for the ip address of the server and I have no clue how to go about getting it. any suggestions? About ready to give up and stick with windows
You shouldn’t need the network repositories at first install, you can get the installation working from the DVD contents and update later, though it would mean that your network card wasn’t detected and it couldn’t set up a connection to the Internet. You would have the same problem with a network install. Worse even since everything has to come over the wire for a network install.
Perhaps you should start a new thread with the subject indicating that you are trying to install from DVD and give the details of your hardware, in particular your network card.
