download speed?

my question is, why when I for example load vlc, for instance, in ubuntu it takes 30 seconds and in opensuse 30 minutes I have the opensuse videolan repository enabled, the rest is just as slow, what am I doing wrong, can anybody please advise me

go to Yast - Network - Devices - network Settings
In the Global options tab, uncheck: Enable IPv6
finish

reboot

thank you for that tip caf4926, I followed these steps precisely, I have now downloaded Opera (6,79mb), with yast2, this took 22 minutes, I have a 4mb adsl line

When you say, downloaded.Do you mean via Yast? Which would be the best way to install Opera. But it is way too slow at 22mins.

Have you tried the speedtest: Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test

Earlier you said:

for example load vlc, for instance, in ubuntu it takes 30 seconds and in opensuse 30 minutes

You mean on the same machine do you??

hello again, thank you for your effort, yes this the same machine, a fujits-siemens amilo si 1520-4gb, did this speed test thingy and here are the results, download 3561 kb/s and upload 405 kb/s

OK.
I suggest you look at the mirrors you have chosen for your added repo’s. Looks like you might be trying to download from another planet.
Mirrors Released Version - openSUSE

In the additional section VLC only seems to have one mirror
Additional YaST Package Repositories - openSUSE

but you see Packman has a number to go at.

I used vlc and opera as an example, packman and others are enabled, should I download the latest openoffice it will take a week

Like I said, look at the mirrors. Try different ones.

I have with no success

this why I ask

am I in the wrong forum perhaps?

The wrong forum. No. Maybe the wrong section.
You could always start a new thread in Network

Explain the issue and the steps you have tried so far. Perhaps tell us where you are in the world and which mirrors you tried. Give the speed test result. And so on…

thank you, have tried there now
