I have a download limit of 5gb a month, the opensuse dvd is 4.3 gb. Does anyone know a how to check how much i have downloaded, or a way around this as if i go over my download limit i will be charged extra.

A way around it… probably your neighbor, or a library, or school,
etc. How to check… call your ISP. There may be other ways but only
the ISP will know for sure. You could also order a boxed set for
relatively cheap (not sure how it would compare to going over your
limit… see your ISP’s prices and opensuse box price to compare).

Good luck.

The best way around that is to get an actual DVD rather than d/l it. There
are many sources you can use, but I’ll recommend my favorite:
http://www.pctech101.com/
It’s a good source for the various linux distros, training materials, and so
forth. (No affiliation, just a satisfied customer)

There are several options here Installation - openSUSE that will very significantly reduce the download amount.

The choice I suspect you will want is “Install Internet” - the documentation only ref’s 10.3 but it looks to be the same in 11.0, except that the .iso filename is different now, you can find it here /distribution/11.0/iso/cd, you want openSUSE-11.0-NET-i386.iso. It’s only 71MB, only the kernel and the installation routine; all the software is downloaded. In the installer you can see how much will be downloaded before you commit - a full install with KDE or Gnome will likely be ~2GB.

Hope that helps.

Some looser kind of isp. Sounds suspiciously like some of them here in the UK, trying prey on the uneducated.

Used these before myself as per Larry

The CD instsall I guess would be good. As already mentioned.
