download failed - timed out

Hi All :slight_smile: Im sorry if this have been asked before but i got a slight problem i know that sometimes the repositories can be a bit slow and sometimes fail to download stuff
but what gets me is waiting for the message “download failed Timed out” 10 - 20mins is a bit long is there anyway to make it timeout faster ?

Any advice appreciated

Which repository?

During an install?

Is your network still up? Can you surf when this occurs? (This problem can
occur during a Network-type install of openSUSE 11.0)

Maybe that mirror is having problems, it might hold the connection until some
higher level timeout occurs. With the connection ‘locked’ like that, the
downloader doesn’t know it could continue on… by the rules, it has to wait.

Are there any backhoes in your area?

Hi again :slight_smile:

Unfortunitly the network is down again but im sure ill be able to fix it when i figure out wich kernel-source i need to install.
In the meentime im using the cheepo network card

as for the repositories its the official ones. For me its not really the problem of the timeout itself but the actual time waiting from when it stops downloading till the actual message actually pops up. As for browsing yes im able to browse just fine when timeouts happen. What i need to know if there is a way to set the rules to make it time out faster if no data is recieved. 10-20 min of inactivity is a bit long especially downloading a bunch of files. EDIT : No im not reinstalling its just updates and stuff…Oki i might sound stupid here but what is a backhoe ?.. I have added the south african repositories aswell but they dont have all the files.

Also, you CAN edit the repository entries in the “Software Repository” list
in YaST and enter a more reliable mirror instead of ‘download.opensuse.org’.

There is a setting in the Desktop Settings application which can help
reduce the wait. It’s under ‘Internet & Network’, then ‘Connection
Preferences’. The Server Response could be shortened to 60 seconds or so.
No idea where a GNOME setting equivalent might be.

There are likely other places to change that timeout too, but that one was
quick and easy to find. See if it helps.

Thanx for the advice problem is im using gnome and can’t find that setting if someone else know where its located in gnome it be great

No idea where it would be located or set in Gnome. If it happens frequently,
I’d edit the repo entries to point to more reliable (for you) repositories.

FWIW: I’ve been experiencing this same problem, however it’s only with SUSE 10.3 and when doing either a new install or an upgrade of older SUSE 10.X to 10.3

Before you ask, why don’t I go to 11.1? Because of hardware, I’m stuck with 10.3. Units running openSUSE are Dell Optiplex GX150’s and it seems the internal video card no longer works under 11.1 and KDE because the drivers used for the video are NON-OSS drivers. Aparently openSUSE is dropping support on anything that uses NON-OSS software, so I’m stuck with 10.3

With a working system, I can go in and change the repositories, however, when you upgrade or install from CD, you’re stuck using openSUSE’s repositories. I’ve yet to find a way of changing from them to one of the mirror sites. The site mirror1.kernel.org/opensuse is rock solid with using them as a repository after a 10.3 system is up and running.

I’d just like to know if there’s a way of forcing a change within the initial install screens of the openSUSE CD. If there’s a way, please let me know.
