I fiddled around with the gcc compiler version and then I was timewarped back to the 80’s in Opensuse, take a look at the loginscreen. The only thing I know is that it would not enter runlevel 5 and I thought it was a graphics problem, so I reinstalled some NVIDIA drivers and this is the result. Does anyone have any idea what might have been downgraded? It did take a while to reboot and it definitely did something when it start up the first time after I fiddled around, like it was compiling something. Any ideas?
Only one: you messed up your system. The fiddling must have being logged in as “root”, otherwise you could not have changed system files. Then, after the fiddling you recompiled the NVIDIA driver, with who knows what results. Reinstall will be faster and more secure than trying to fix this.

Hmmmmnn. There might be still a 69% chance of recovering with the help of the expert in this forum (excluding me I’m not an expert). How’s that? I will try to help if I can and have a little knowledge of the problem.
Did you just install GCC, or did you install a complete devel package such as KDevelop? If it’s the latter, I’ve been bitten by that myself. What might have happened is that you
installed the development kit,
it installed all of the libraries for KDE (or Gnome) development …
and when you uninstalled, it deleted the primary desktop GUI and left you with an alternative.
I don’t recall this happening to me under OpenSuSE, but I did have something very much like this occur with CentOS a few months ago. The solution is to painstakingly go through Yast and re-install the desired version of KDE or Gnome. Also, as conram suggested, go ahead and log in. See which GUI (if any) you actually have (looks like twm).
And as brunomcl suggested, the “repair installed system” thingie might work. Give that a whirl.
Incidentally, if this is indeed what happened – installing/uninstalling the devel environment hosed your GUI – that’s a bug in the development package’s RPM file(s). You should report it as a bug to the developers.
If he can login into that screen in the screenshot and he is presented with an alternative beside gnome or kde e.g icewm or fvwm and has a working yast it is still possible to recover without reinstalling or using the dvd/cd repair tool.
