hi everybody,
i’m thinking to switch from Windows Vista to Opensuse 11.2 on my acer 5920g.
For my past experiences on linux systems the most obnoxious problem after the os change is the management of 3d card drivers: my laptop mounts an nvidia geforce 8600m, does opensuse 11.2 have known issues with nvidia proprietary drivers? any known problems?
Thanks for the attention
NVIDIA drivers generally work well, assuming they’re properly installed. Just remember to use nvidia-settings as root for any configuration, much safer than sax2.
I use openSuSE 11.2 on the acer 5920G and did not encounter any problem so far. Neither with 11.1. All hardware is supported except for the multimedia keys on the right side of the keyboard. But to be honest, I never use these keys also not when I’m using Windows. I have a dual boot setup.
Go ahead an install 11.2. You will enjoy it. It’s much faster Vista that was installed on the laptop.
excuse my ignorance, but i’m not sure i understand what you’re saying: usually i download the drivers, install, reboot, close X-Server (using init3), access SaX2 to fiddle with the settings
and then reboot X-Server…how can i use nvidia settings?
That’s one way, and many succeed with that. My own experience is mainly with setting up dual monitor configurations with NVIDIA and Sax2 has often screwed them up. As a matter of habit more than as a scientific truth, I have since come to avoid Sax2 with NVIDIA cards, mainly because nvidia-settings is so good and gives access to much more fine-tuning. You run it simply by opening a root konsole and typing “nvidia-settings”.
Do whatever suits you best, but I would suggest not to mix both. You can end up with double entries in xorg.conf, sometimes conflicts between Sax and NVIDIA entries.
