Folks, dont update ATI proprietary driver on Radeon HD 4000, Radeon HD 3000 or Radeon HD 2000 series - no matter the method (atiupgrade, 'makerpm-amd-12.6.sh , ‘hard way’, repo)! The latest Catalyst (12.6) doesn’t support these models anymore.
Do note, however, that there is a legacy driver for these devices … evidently the 12.6 legacy driver was released yesterday – more info can be found here:
I know. I’m working on it. The version of atiupgrade availabe in repo yet (4.1.1) will install current Catalyst, also on legacy models. Thus you should NOT use it, because the driver is going to install successfully but won’t work. However you can use it to downgrade to 12.4, because this driver still supports older models. A lot of changes in the script are necessary. I’m working on a new version of atiupgrade which should handle both, the legacy driver for HD 2000/3000/4000 and current Catalyst for other models. However I couldn’t test it with a Radeon HD > 5000, since I don’t have such a graphics card. I will update the version in my repo as soon as I have tested it with both models (I ordered a 5400 yesterday). In the meantime, atiupgrade 5.0 is available here: http://www.unixversal.com/linux/openSUSE/atiupgrade. This version will install Legacy Catalyst on legacy models. If it’s not able to determine the graphics card model (ATI cards often don’t tell their name), it will ask you. I intended to write more details in the atiupgrade thread, but then the forum became unavailable. Will do.
Also notice that this legacy 12.6 is beta and will print a watermark “Testing use only” on your desktop. I’m also not convinced it is better (scrolling code up and down in gvim seems slower).
Yesterday I downloaded the 12.6 Legacy Catalyst driver set from ATI/AMD and installed it on 12.2.
No problems, and the “Testing Use Only” watermark that used to appear in the bottom right-hand corner is no longer present. So this must be a working, production Legacy (2000, 3000, 4000 series) set of drivers for general use.
I think you could unstick this thread now. There is a legacy driver available now, it’s not beta anymore and it’s working OK. Whether users download the installer from AMD site or use atiupgrade, there should get the right driver in most cases.
Therfore note: The legacy driver does not work on openSUSE 12.3 in combination with the X-Server 1.13.1.
You can still use the legacy driver with openSUSE 12.2 up to January 15, 2014, then the life cycle of openSUSE 12.2 ends and there won’t be any updates any more.
