Dont like Gnome + FF

I have just burnt and tried the 12.3 gnome version and i really dont like Gnome i used it a few years ago and it was OK but now i cant get a feel for it at all, I know i dont want the KDE version but that was the only 2 downloads i saw even though i read there was E17 sawfish and awesome xfce… so im guessing they have to be added when i install onto my HDD.

The question i need to ask is about getting rid of gnome and running maybe E17 or xfce do i just uninstall gnome or is there some dependencies that will cause me to end up with a disabled machine or is it safe to get rid of it… i dont want to keep it at all
the same goes for FF which always used to be a favourite but now its got itself ruined id rather have qupzilla or chromium

I ask what may seem ¨stupid¨ questions as i know from windows experience that many things have hooks into other things and getting rid of something is very often impossible or problematic, and with a system built around gnome or kde certain functionality could be lost…

I am not new to linux but not technically even a novice on it…anything more than a ip config or ifconfig is about my limits of command line

open YaST and then choose “Patterns” drop down on the left hand side and install xfce pattern if available.
For E17 search for E17 in the search box and install the packages. Logout of GNOME and change “session” to E17 or XFCE.

have you already installed the GNOME, or are you just running it live
off the CD?

i ask, because if you have installed it you can just open YaST
Software Management, click on the “View” button and select
“Patterns”, scroll down to Graphical Environment and click to install
XFCE or whatever…then press the “Accept” button…

logout (not shutdown) and on the resulting Login screen, go to
“Sessions” in the lower left and select the DE you
installed…thereafter it will default to running the new DE you
selected…

to get back to GNOME do the same again but select GNOME…

you can install XFCE, E17 and LXDE and switch around…

unless you have a space crunch i’d suggest you leave FF and whatever
else you have installed, until the next time you want to move to a
new version (next in about 7 months) and do a format install then to
loose what you don’t install.

OH! by the way, if you had downloaded the DVD you would have had the
chance to choose from several DEs (instead of downloading the GNOME
or KDE Live CD and having only one option)…

Thank you both for your quick replies

I think i will go and get the full dvd and just install what i need, as i do not see a reason to have things i wont use i guess i must be getting old as i dont like many of the newer versions of many things

thank you again

Yep, I think that is a good decision.
Good luck.
