Dolphin +preview files

OK, I have a (possibly) stupid question. IN Konq3 we could use the embedded text editor in order to preview a text file. How can I do that with Dolphin in KDE 4.3.4? Or, I cannot, because someone decided that it was an “advanced”, or useless option?

Note that I have modified the file associations to allow that.

I can’t answer your question about Dolphin, but could I suggest you take a
look at Krusader. It will do what you want and a lot more besides. IMHO
it’s the best file manager, by a long way.

Not entirely sure I understand what is missing (but preview is working in Dolphin). Have you enabled it via View > Preview? In addition, you can adjust what is previewed via Settings > Configure Dolphin > General (Select what type of files you would like a preview window for).

Deano, they mean like kde3 used to do when you clicked a text file it just showed the file contents in the entire browser window, it didn’t open kwrite and it was more than the small preview in dolphin.

Thanks caf. I guess I’d forgotten about that feature already. (Just shows how you adapt to these changes). The small preview lets me verify the file contents well enough to decide whether to proceed with opening it…

Yes, me too.
But that feature from kde3 was neat.

it’s worth mentioning that konqueror4 can still do the “view in embedded preview” thru right click selection or altering ConfigureKonqueror>FileMangagement>FileAssociations to open chosen file types in the embedded viewer.

If it didn’t, since i use this constantly, i’d be using something else.

the info/preview panel in dolphin is something i disabled a long time ago for speed reasons, pdf’s seem particularly slow (lags the machine), and i only use it for special cases using a toolbar access icon.

it is odd (at least i can’t see the logic) that features in dolphin (ties to meta-tag/nepomuk/strigi) are not present in konqueror4 and other things in konq4 are not available in dolphin.

left and right hands…

(P.S. i really really miss kio-locate)

Sweet. That’s a great answer. So you can.

OK, first things first.
Preview is possibly, not the best description, but that how we learned it! Anyway, Dolphin’s preview is just a useless feature. I cannot read/search a text file from the preview. Has anyone tried to read a large text file from Dolphin’s preview?

Anyway, the reason I do not use Krusader is just that I do not have time to ready the manual (and I should do, if I want to use it correctly).

Finally, at least to me, it’s clear the the KDE developers try to force us to use that kiddie FM, Dolphin. Even the crippled Konqueror is better than Dolphin. I have to raise my voice of concern about the lack of features from Konqueror that exists in Dolhin (like the filter bar) and vice versa. It’s not normal. In theory, the use the same KPart (Dolphin), so they should have the same functionality. Right? Unless of course…

I think that I will use openFATE for making Konq the default FM again. :\

Didn’t you read the post by @j_xavier
It solves the issue!!

The ‘official’ File manager has no such feature! Konq on the other hand, misses some (important to me) feature, the filter bar.

In any case, I feel that the ‘restoration’ of Konq as the default FM is a solution for me. I still believe that Konq should be the default FM, so, I will run a vote for it
