Dolphin is unable to open things in administrator mode

When Dolphin is in administrator mode, it can only browse directories. Anything else (like text files) fails to open, and nothing happens on Open with.
Additionally, when it has finished copying files, it is unable to show the target directory (although you are able to navigate to the target using the main window, of course).

Same here. I thought this was fixed. Please file a bugreport.

I don’t think it’s a bug, I think it’s done by design. If you want to edit files you have to use ‘kdesu kate’.

I had to make a link on the Desktop: link to application → “kdesu konqueror /” and then that opens superuser version of Konqueror. Then I added the RPM for Gnome’s Gedit. Then I used the “open with other → gedit”. Thereafter it was OK. What a drama of a workarond lol!

Since I dislike Dolphin anyway, I just added the Konqeuror widget to the
panel and removed dolphin. Painless - and the root mode works just fine,
thank you. Why a perfectly capable tool is replaced with one lacking major
functionalities of the existing one is beyond me.

careful, some around here (not me) think that is KDE4 bashing and will
‘jump you’ for not enjoying the pain…

[my ‘ticket’ from the FAA came in the mail, did yours?]

I do not want to edit files, I want to view them as desktop user. (Of course, there are files that the desktop user cannot view — but there are plenty I could view if Dolphin allowed me to.)

Did you see the reply on the bugreport? Looks like it’s reported already, the devs should be on it.

“Knurpht” may be right (“My 2 cents: the bug is in ‘kdesu’…”).

I have no problem with ‘Dolphin’. Then, my current set up is not KDE:
openSUSE 11.2, 64-bit.
KDE Factory repos: Desktop, Community, Playground.
awesome-3.4.4-1.1.x86_64.

Within ‘awesome’ windowmanager, in the ‘mlterm’:
$ su -

dolphin &

Clicking on a text file brings up ‘kwrite’; I can edit. Choosing ‘Open With’, I can view and edit with ‘GVim’ and ‘XEmacs’.

Of course, with packages from ‘Factory’ repos, I may or may not have problems with ‘Dolphin’ within KDE.

Taki

I had the same problem and after a lot of trying, gave up and went back to Konqueror, which works great.
