Dolphin - Information Panel / Tool-tips no file meta-data shown.

Dolphin (V15.04.1) does not display file meta-data in the Information Panel or Tool-tip…

Is this a ‘Baloo Thing’ (déjà vu), ie, meta-data is only shown for indexed files. I have indexing disabled.

This is the ‘Baloo Stuff’ installed: baloo5, baloo5-file, baloo5-imports, baloo5-kioslaves, baloo5-lang, libKF5BalooXapian1, and libKF5Baloo1; all V5.9.0

This should be fixed since a year. And it works fine here (13.2 with the latest dolphin package from KDE:Applications, and the standard Baloo packages from the update repo, which are the latest upstream version too).

Dolphin is still KDE4 based, so uses the KDE4 Baloo.
Do you have baloo-file installed? This is necessary to have the metadata display working in KDE4, even with indexing disabled.

OK…

Interesting, this was on a new install that I did earlier today from the LiveCD (snapshot of 2015-05-18).

All of the Baloo ‘4’ components were installed apart from baloo-file.

Installing it, zypper indicated baloo5-file should be removed.

Having allowed that all is now fine, meta-data is being shown.

Many thanks, appreciate your help.

Sigh.
Yes, baloo-file conflicts with baloo5-file, because they contain the same executables, baloo_file_extractor in particular that is called by KDE4’s baloowidgets to get the metadata.
Normally it shouldn’t matter which one is installed unless their output is incompatible meanwhile, because the widget just runs the executable and parses stdout.

But, I noticed that the KF5 baloo-widgets (in dolphin5, both of which are not released yet) do not display anything for files in $HOME that are not indexed (yet). Might be a bug that returned, missing metadata for files outside $HOME didn’t work again in Baloo5 as well but has been fixed recently. But the question is whether it is a bug in Baloo5, if it’s in baloo-widgets5 it wouldn’t affect Dolphin4 at all. Or it might also be a completely different problem…

If the problem is caused by baloo5-file being incompatible to baloo-file, there’s not much that can be done about it at the moment though. But a KF5 based dolphin will be released in August.
