For any folder but Trash the column “Deletion time” is useless.
But for Trash the column “Deletion time” is essential;
as well as the column “Path”.
So when navigating the file system I don’t have columns
“Deletion time” (and “Path”) shown.
But when I have to have a look into the Trash and open it
I always have to activate both columns.
(Just to deactivate them again, after opening a new folder
with Dolphin).
It’s hard to believe that this is the way meant to be.
I know that some honoured members of this forum are
about allergic to the word “MS Windows”,
but as far as I can remember (Windows 2.11?) the file explorer
shows Trash (“Recyler” in Windows) with these both columns,
and all other folders without them. Naturally.
Still… still… after some thinking:
It is a workaround.
As column “Deletion time” is necessary only in “Trash”;
and for all other folders it is completely useless.
So it’s a bit “exaggerated” to have indivual settings
for every folder just for that one special case.
As columns “Deletion time” and “Path” are necessary
for “Trash” they should show there always.
The option of individual style for all other folders
should be apart from that.
(Maybe in Tumbleweed )
You’re probably overthinking this option | feature.
Start up Dolphin and select Home in left column. Ensure the columns shown are what you prefer as an overall default.
Now, select Settings, then Configure, and set “remember style for each folder”. Select Ok to save setting. Some folks prefer to Quit Dolphin at this point, then start it up again (no need).
Okay, now select Trash. Adjust the columns that you want shown.
At this point, you can click around to different sub-directories and it will show as with the original default (the one difference will be Trash). You do NOT need to go to every sub-dir and set a custom layout. That would be a pain!!
Yes, I admit, my last thoughts are kind of hair-splitting
(My point was that Dolphin would reserve space for every folder with that option enabled. But probably it doesn’t, but only save the view options if changed.)
To resolve confusing:
I mentioned Tumbleweed as reference to the 2nd post - as Tumbleweed is ahead
Sometimes, I think a visual clue can be helpful. So, check my screenshot below. As you can see, Dolphin stores the settings down in the ~/.local/share/* sub-dir path. Also, notice the portion I circled with two different sub-dirs named, “global” and “trash”.
Under each of those is a file named, “.directory”. Guess what settings are stored in each of those files? Yep, the column names and widths, etc, for each. If you’re not in Trash, Dolphin will use “global” for view properties.
BTW, I think OP had a concern about storing these various settings (disk usage). The amount of storage consumed for the “view-properties” is minimalist.
