Does OpenSuse "work" on my Compaq Presario CQ60 Laptop?

Hi,
I’m new here, so sorry if I am asking this question in the wrong place.

I have a Compaq Presario CQ60; I tried to install an earlier version of OpenSuse on it
ages ago, and really messed it up - necessitating a complete re-install of Windows, and removal of OpenSuse. Not only couldn’t it handle wireless/web stuff, but I had trouble with screen resolution as well.

So … will the 11.1 issue work?

I note that the Presario CQ60 is still not on the list of Compaq laptops that OpenSuse has been tried on. Will this change? How long is it likely to be?

And more generally, why can’t installing be totally automatic?

Thanks for any answers.

it will change just as soon as someone (like you) have installed SUSE,
AND logged that fact on that page!

why don’t you download a Live CD (i’d suggest the one with Gnome) and
read here about how to make sure you got a proper download AND burned
disk: http://tinyurl.com/6jwtg9

then pop that baby in your Presario, boot it up and see how it
runs…check everything: web cam, sound, resolution, wireless, etc
etc etc (hey, some of those will probably require you to use YaST to
update some packages…

then, if you like it (RECOGNIZE that it can never run as fast from the
CD as it can from your hard drive)…THEN consider installing
it…AFTER you have done all the study you need to do to insure a
successful install…

IF you have another disk you can slide in (and remove your windows
disk) do that and try an install…just to check and to get the
feel…learn some how to do things, etc…

THEN if you really want to dual boot, READ how to install to a dual
boot machine and let’er rip…you already know that you MAY have some
problems, but if you check the forums here you will learn if they can
be overcome…or not…

never ever just start clicking…a sure way to ruin your install
(AND) get things “really messed it up - necessitating a complete
re-install of Windows, and removal of OpenSuse”.

> And more generally, why can’t installing be totally automatic?

how many times have you bought a computer with NO operating system and
done a complete install? it is not a simple matter…certainly it can
never be as simple as installing a custom built image, made expressly
for a particular box requiring a specific set of drivers…an image
where the software maker AND the computer maker work together to make
sure (for YOU) that everything works together, and slides in smoothly…

THAT is what you have when you use a disk used to reinstall a messed
up Windows install…

INITIAL install of openSUSE is nothing like that…never will be
until Compaq decides to fully support openSUSE and helps us custom
build a simple, perfect install image…

see?

Ditto what brassy said and also linux plays nice with other operating
systems but cannot guess where it will be installed so a little knowledge
from the user is needed.

If you have ever tried installing windows on a machine with an existing
linux installed at the front of the disk and taking all the space then
trying to configure it for dual boot then you would understand why the linux
install is a lot easier than you think

I have OpenSUSE 11.1 running KDE 4.4 on my HP Compaq CQ60 just fine. Everything essential (for me) works well (wifi, nVidia 3D graphics, card reader etc.)
I have noticed since I upgraded to KDE 4.4 that the machine can run hot now and the fan is on almost constantly.

I have not yet tried to tweak power settings. I might turn off the 3D desktop for a while see if it’s the vid card/chip thats heating the box up.
