I’m looking at possibly buying a laptop with 2 Nvidia GTX 280m cards in SLI mode.
It costs an extra €500 for the second card!
Does anyone know if this works well under Linux? Is it worth the extra cost?
Mainly for the game - Enemy Territory: Quake Wars.
Thanks

Looking at all the bechmarks and having had a play with my mates machine (
he has got 2x8600gtxs IIRC or could be 8800
s ) he did not know what was
inside and had only one hooked up, I SLI`d them and ran COD4 he said it was
a lot smoother and the quality could be set much higher with less of a drop
in speed, it all depends how you configure it ( this is on the windows side
though ) I think we had the best results with one doing the actual drawing
while the other did the textures or it could have been where they did one
frame each alternate, not quite sure.
But I think with all the tweaks we could only eke out about 15% at the most
20% increase in performance, however I will say that I was working in the
dark ( first time I had played with SLI ) and so maybe could have got more
if the rest of the system would have allowed it, I think he might have been
a bit mem, cpu bound though.
I am in 2 minds as to getting another ATI card for my new machine, at the
moment it will have my old 4830 and the choice is get another and crossfire
them, cost about £75 or save a bit more cash and go for a newer chip but
that is going to be at least double that and as I do not play any of the
newer games COD4, UT3 on windows ( hey that is all I use it for ) and ET,
Doom3, older UT`s and some other less demanding games on SuSE I think
getting another 4830 will do for me for a long time plus the added advantage
is if I want I can have all 4 monitors setup* ( left, right, centre, centre
top ) MMmmm monitors… droool!!!
HTH
- I have 3 monitors ready for that and a cheap 4830+new bigger monitor= 1
bigger card money wise = nobrainer

Yes SLI works under linux
That is a debate in your own head
500 euros for 10-15% improvement is your call. for just a few games I would say no. For have the right to say I have 2 gtx280m’s in my laptop, maybe (if I had the cash and did not care about anything else).
with 1 280m you should be able to run almost any game on high settings, with 2 you CAN run any game on high settings.
Thanks for the replies.
Yes, 500 euros is a bucketload of money, and it’s not that I’m a game fanatic. Actually it drives me nuts playing ETQW because I’m rubbish at it rotfl!!
I could drop the 2nd card and donate some money to the WINE team again, it might be money better spent!
