Does my router hate me?

Mornin’ Ladies & Gents,

This is a message from a absolute puzzled pinguin.
I’ve come to the point that I am starting to justify, using proper hardware parts as clay-pigeons. Therefore I thought i was about “that-time” to post a message.

*The hardware:
1 Asus netbook N10j with 2gb and N270, Atheros AR5B91
1 WIFI-router, Netgear Rangemax NEXT Wireless-N Router WNR834Bv2

*The software:
Netbook: OpenSUSE 11.1 Gnome, updated to present.
Router:Netgear Smartwizard, firmware updated to present.

*The symptoms:
Since a week my router denies WIFI connections from my netbook. The boss (also known as my girlfriend) uses a Dell Inspiron with XP and encounters no problems whatsoever, which doesn’t help for migrating the boss from XP to openSUSE.
I have a proper wired connection on the router.
I have proper wifi connection on routers when visiting mates and family, (Apple, Netgear, Belkin and Linksys routers)
The network manager displays the router as a proper signal, but when I try to connect, the security password keeps returning
The connection wasn’t always stable there was an occasional drop-out, but he! I’m Atheros equipped so i took it for granted.
No the connection is dead.

*The tried options:
On the netbook:
Deleted the “autoconnect” on the network manager and started a new connection. No result
Re-installed the networkmanager. no result

On the router:
Changed the password WPA & WPA2 personal… no result
Changed the type of security tot WEP… no result
Physically reset the router to factory settings… no result

I am a graphical user and haven’t got much knowledge about terminals and thingies… So… please help me!

With kind regards

Fabian de Pooter

Hi,

Please give me some more infos:

As you described the symptoms I guess that it worked before. Is this correct?

Open a console and type:

su
(enter root password)
dmesg -c

Leave the console open. You will need it later. After that try to connect to your router. Go to the console again and type:

dmesg
iwlist wlan0 scanning
iwlist wlan0 channel

If your wlan device is not wlan0 replace wlan0 with the device name on your system.

Paste the results here. Please do not paste the result of the dmesg -c. That’s only to clear the buffer before starting the tests.

Bye

Erik

He Erik,
Thnx for your quick response.
You’re right it worked allright before.
My device is Wlan0.

Now it’s getting more daft… I’m actually sitting next to the router and I’m only getting a quarter reception strength.
The network from the appartment above is giving full reception

and:
linux-lfdk:/home/faab # iwlist wlan0 scanning
wlan0 No scan results

linux-lfdk:/home/faab # iwlist wlan0 channel
wlan0 11 channels in total; available frequencies :
Channel 01 : 2.412 GHz
Channel 02 : 2.417 GHz
Channel 03 : 2.422 GHz
Channel 04 : 2.427 GHz
Channel 05 : 2.432 GHz
Channel 06 : 2.437 GHz
Channel 07 : 2.442 GHz
Channel 08 : 2.447 GHz
Channel 09 : 2.452 GHz
Channel 10 : 2.457 GHz
Channel 11 : 2.462 GHz
Current Frequency=2.412 GHz (Channel 1)

Hi,

No results isn’t good but very strange as you tell me that the Network Manager shows you the strength of your and your neighbours network. So iwlist should show you the networks. Did you do the test sitting next to your router?

What about the dmesg?

Your router sends within channel 1 and 11? I had the same problem here as I bought a new notebook which didn’t support channel 13 which was the one I have chosen for me before. Even though it shouldn’t have worked before with a wrong channel.

Perhaps I didn’t expressed myself well. First you do

dmesg -c

which you don’t paste and after you tried to connect

dmesg

and paste the result here.

bye

Erik

The router is set to Auto for channels.
I see about 10 networks in the network manager list. Including my own.
When I shut down the netbook it fails to shutdown the network manager.

Thnx for your help

Fabian

Hi,

Seems the latest Network Manager has a bug. For a workaround look here:

WPA not working anymore with ath5k / NetworkManager (NC10) - Page 2 - openSUSE Forums

and for a downgrade here:

Hi
Whilst I don’t have much to add to your issue, there is another user
(6tr6tr) who has an Asus 100x model with the same problem. The user
also has 10+ visible AP’s in the vicinity and can’t get it to work…

I did build an ath9k module with some serialization patches which you
may be interested in trying available here;
Get It
Search on ath9k-kmp and select the one for your kernel.

I’m also using the ath9k but with a N280 cpu but only have about 4
active AP’s and connect without any issue.

Evenin’

I downgraded the networkmanager 5 minutes ago to the last version.
The problem no longer occurs.
Many thnx for the solution. Erik many thnx for helping finding problem.

Helo Guys

I’m a new user in openSUSE 11.1. I’ve learned a lot of things about linux but I cannot configure my wifi with my router Linksys WRT54G (WPA Key Secure). When I attemp to connect to my Wireless, I receive always 2 or 3 times the message to introduce the password. Later,I get the connection but I cannot connect to any apge with mozilla.

I’ve a ASUS EEE 1000HE. In the post about “Getting your Wireless to Work” I was checking the list until “ping external IP”.

In the first case, when I did ping over my router, I get 4 of 5 responses. But with external IP, I didn’t receive any response.

As you know, this ASUS come with:

Wireless LAN: AR928X Wireless Network Adapter (PCI Express) (wlan0)
Kernel Drive: Ath9k

Could you help me?

Hi,

You’re welcome. Nice to hear that the problem has gone.

Bye

Erik

Hi,

Please open another thread.

Bye

Hi
I see this is your first post in the forum, so welcome

You best bet is to read through the stickies at the beginning of
the forum and start a new thread, rather than tack onto an existing
one

(PS, I have the same setup wrt54g/wpa and a 1000HE and it works fine
so I’m guessing is may be your router config)
