Does KDE4 require a current KDE3.5 at the same time?

I’m on 10.3 with KDE3.5.10. I’m going to try KDE4. However, space on my partition is a bit tight.

Has anyone installed KDE4 and then successfully removed KDE3.5? Or is KDE4 dependent on KDE3.5 once they have been installed together?

Thanks

No the two are separate DE’s, I personally in the past successfully run KDE 3 and 4 Together and separately without much of a hitch.

If you haven’t enough space to make another partition on which to try KDE4,
I wouldn’t bother. I’ve got 3.5 and 4.2 on this machine plus 3.5 and 4.1 on
another. Oh, and OpenSUSE 10.3 on my laptop!

I can just about get by with 4.2 but it’s got more flaky over the past
couple of weeks, particularly Konqueror (4.2 version), Open Office, and
Knode.

Thanks for that. So when you say you’ve run them separtely without a hitch, you mean you’ve installed KDE4 alongside KDE3.5, found no issues uninstalling KDE3.5 and KDE4 ran afterwards without a hitch ?

Just checking I understand your answer!

Yup, I might be new here to these forums but have been a linux user for about 5 years now.

Sorry for ignoring your answer, Graham, the last two replies came together!

I guess I’m just looking trouble  I still want to try KDE4. Just curious now, both answers seem to suggest KDE4 and KDE3.5 are entangled once installed together, although KDE4 can be installed separately as a fresh install or if KDE3.5 is removed first.

Is there a migration path from KDE3.5 to KDE4? Will we have to wait for a future release of KDE before we can safely uninstall KDE3.5, or has this been done successfully already?

Sorry to be pedantic, but neither answer is clear on these points.

EDIT: trying to reply while answers coming in - OK I’m clear now, I’ll give it a go.

There is no real migration issue, I have changed from KDE 3 to 4 without much issue.
I have seen that KDE 3 does leave some config files behind though, but they wont get in your way if you use KDE 4.
Just take caution nonetheless, plan your migration carefully.
Just keep in mind KDE 4 is still very new and lacks a lot of stuff KDE 3 had.

Just a few more questions - what would be the best way to uninstall KDE3.5 after KDE4.

YAST I imagine, but is there a single package to select for deletion? Will Koffice and Konqueror be left ?

The only package that comes to mind is kdebase, but if you update to KDE 4.2 it might be overridden.
I know for sure that konqueror will be updated though, works that way under Kubuntu hardy heron when you use the extra repositories.
I am sure opensuse will be similar.

If you have applications that needs the kde 3.xxx then you will not be able to wipe clean your kde 3.xxx in your machine. As to installing kde 4, it is like installing gnome along side with kde.

I guess I’m still unclear how to safely delete KDE3.5 once KDE4 is installed.

When you did it for KDE4.1, did you uninstall kdebase?

I have KOffice, Firefox, Konsole. Not much else. Koffice website says "KOffice is currently available as version 1.6.3 designed to run with KDE 3.3 or later. KOffice is released separately from the rest of KDE, so KOffice releases are not in sync with those of KDE. "

So, I take it from that uninstalling KDE3.5 will not cause issues with KOffice or my other apps. Cool.
