Does anyone know how to use the text-mode boot menu

I have issues with installing openSuSE 11.1. Whenever I select installation the screen goes black. Someone suggested hitting Escape to go to the text mode boot menu. Unfortunately, I have no idea what to do at that point. Can anyone help me here?

Try setting the display to a lower resolution when the install/boot screen appears (one of the f keys at bottom of screen)

Thanks, I’ve actually tried several options on that screen and the only one that seems to work is choosing x86 instead of x86_64. I would really prefer installing x86_64 though. So, I’ve given up on the graphical menu and hoping I can do something from text mode.
