I know it’s 11.2 right now but my supplier says to use 10.3 because they never tried it with 11.2

Likewise on our servers we had to run windows xp and not vista let alone 7.

I would not rely on this for production critical servers. Either you keep the OS up to date, or you switch to SLES/SLED which are supported much longer. The choice is which price to pay.
