We all know that Gnome 2 has forked in to Mate https://github.com/Perberos/Mate-Desktop-Environment
Starting with 12.1 kde3 is back to openSUSE, don`t you think a Mate repo maybe a good think for gnome 2 “old timers”?
If you like the idea you can vote for it here: https://features.opensuse.org/312946
Sounds nice, similar to Mint 12 now?
No. I think people should just concern themselves with developing gnome 3, and making it more gnome 2-like, like mint. Btw, I happen to like gnome-shell as is.
thats a good point. But acoording to what I learned, the upstream Gnome guys are not very keen on having people committing their ideas to Gnome. So even if Mint develops an extension to Gnome 3, it is not very likely that it will make it to upstream. This means, that it will remain a “Mint-only” thing if the other distros do not take it directly from Mint.
By the way, the idea of Mint is great. I tried it in Mint 12 RC and it actually usable for me, whereas the normal Gnome 3 isn´t. But in the Mint extension are still some glitches and things which are not logical to users like me.
Anyway, I also learned that Mate is Gnome 2 being ported to GTK3. As Gnome 2 was a really good DE, I think it is important to preserve it for the future. So I voted for “yes”. That being said, I also want to say, that I am normally not a guy who looks back and cries over old stuff. But letting Gnome 2 go to waste would be a loss, in my eyes.
AFAIK the reason to move to GNOME 3 was about the same as when KDE moved to KDE4: too hard to maintain the codebase. The call to the devs was about the same: save the old stuff for us, get new things in the old stuff. Then I read the first complaints that KDE wasn’t nicely integrating with the social networks…sigh. That’s about the same as wanting a horse that runs 50 mph to go out on the highway, where everyone is riding a car at 80 mph.
I’m currently working on MATE on a test repository. Before there can be opened to users, this has to be runned through the SUSE Security Team as it involves polkit policies amongst other things. The default policies are not ready for openSUSE. Don’t bother branching my packages, they won’t work, I’ve left errors behind (the packages build though) in order to make sure no one is blowing up systems.
Once it’s ready, people will know. Also a lot of code from GNOME:Ayatana is going to be made available on openSUSE for a special version of MATE which I hope to propose to openSUSE and make it an official MATE spin on steroids if openSUSE allows it to be an official spin.
There’s a lot more that could be said, but this is not the moment. Even if the vote on FATE goes down, I’m sure I will have a repo for it, even if it is away from the openSUSE structure.

As an IT pro I’ve set up thousands of desktops with Gnome 2. Now what do you think is going to happen when they get a load of Gnome 3? Simple, it will be a field day. Gnome need only look at MS to realize the major blunder they made. Even later versions of 2 started to drift away. Just look back on some of 1.x versions that captivated Red Hat users. We need to slow down and reassess. Gnome was king 5 years ago. As for me I’m migrating back to KDE. Why do you think Slackware held on to 3.10 for so long? If it’s not broken, don’t fix it.

Not sure if in IT they would jump ships right away. Aren’t they hesitant
to any changes?
I run KDE4x and i am happy but i can imagine that in a company they may
still run KDE3. But i am not an insider and just an observer.

It is not that IT professionals do not want change. Change means lots of
money, and money is nice. It is the clients who do not want change, because
it is they who have to pay that money.

You know, maybe i’ll try KDE 3 out.
anyway, i think that is what i had in mind. The cost factor and reliability.

I also have seen it in Mint 12 RC and installed now Cinnamon in openSUSE
which looks really good and usable (my wife is a gnome user and she was
not very pleased when I showed her gnome 3 on a live cd), the Cinnamon
flavour she likes.
I think the glitches and bugs with that extension are to be expected, it
is something new, I am optimistic that it will mature quickly. Mint has
a large user base and there seems to interest by some part of the
openSUSE community to support it for openSUSE.

I discovered this thread quite by accident, as I was just browsing the Community & Fun forum. This thread struck me as particularly timely, as I have been researching alternatives to Gnome 3. With Ubuntu and Linux Mint already installed, I faced the prospect of Unity. I was particularly pleased to see the Linux Mint commitment to a Gnome 2-ish environment.
Although I use KDE, I have long used Gnome and. frankly, feel more comfortable with a Gnome desktop. My trusty openSUSE 11.3 (soon to be at EOL) is almost always Gnome, with occasional KDE use (KDE 4.7.4 appears never to meet 11.3, but that is a subject for another time). I have read many reasons for the development of, and path selection to Gnome 3. Code base maintenance, new development and various enhancements are very good reasons, though the Gnome 3 direction is, IMO, lacking in the user’s desktop preferences. These preferences seem to be manifesting in this survey, in the uptick in Linux Mint use and the developement of Mate.
A further consideration is the EOL cycle. As noted above, 11.3 is at EOL, and 11.4 approaches in eight months. I support the initiative for a Mate repository, and do feel that options such as Gnome 3 only may be counter-productive in future expansion.
