Do we need a forum for security issues?

Carrying on from this discussion, do you believe the community here would benefit from having a forum dedicated to discussing security issues, or do you believe security issues are best handled inline in the existing forums?

Kim, excellent idea the poll, thanks. Should have come to my “low volume brain”

Great. As for me, a subforum “Security” is a MUST. All in.

I 2nd that.

My thoughts are;

While it can be handled here it would be more productive I think to start one just for security issues. Security is very important to all of us and is a big deal these days. If you have one forum with all security issues it would keep things nice and neat plus make it easier to search.

Couldn’t hurt to try it either way. Even if it is on a trial period. Setting won’t be hard to set it up. If it doesn’t work out then nothing is lost and that forum can be dropped.

How ever if it does work out it would be another plus for the OpenSuse community. Can’t have Google searched bringing up Ubuntu all the time, like to see more SuSe coming up, lol

> like to see more SuSe coming up, lol

use this term in your search string: suse

or, site:opensuse.org

lol. Not what I mean. But, even if I use Suse 11.1 in my searches I still end up seeing more Ubuntu then Suse at times, depending on what I am looking for.

If I look for something for Linux in general, then I see Ubuntu most of the time.

Edit: Also this is not the only forum I am par of. I am with two other Linux forums mainly for the security issues. I am sure I am not the only one here that does that.

when it comes to security (which is what we are talking about,
right?), most anything that is good for Ubuntu is good for openSUSE,
Red Hat, Debian, SLED and et cetera and vice versa…

so, what i am saying is: go ahead and look at the security tips
discussed for/by/in Ubuntu forums/users/etc as it is highly likely
that if it is useful to a brown background, it is also useful to a
green (or red, or etc) background AS LONG AS it is a Linux background…

on the other hand, if it is only good for the BSOD-OS that is a
different matter, entirely.

Yes, I agree. However, some solutions (eg search for programs are relevant to both .deb-based and RPM based distributions)

I think so, a forum for security would be great. Especially when messages like this come through the mailing list:

Broadcast message from ml-admin@opensuse.org
        (/dev/pts/0) at 07:30 GMT ...

The system is going down for halt NOW!

What would that have to do with having a security forums here? As for
that message, I think it has to do with
the
planned power outage.

For me it depends on the perspective. If my system has broadcast blocking and a broadcast message like the one stated comes through my system, then it’s a security issue on my system and I would like to know how to lock it down.

Like Multimedia is a subforum of Applications, I’d like Security to be a subforum of Install or rather Network. Maybe, thinking out loud, rename Network to Network/Security.

These days I’ve been in some debates about linux and security/vulnerability. I would not want the forum to be like those. Mainly talk about possible linux virusses and other malware, where it is explained how to open up your system completely and then issue commands like ‘rm -rf /’.

I personally always felt there should of been a server forum this could of caught these type of things as well as, mail servers, apache, php, ftp, samba, ssh etc…

Lets be honest viruses atm would be quite a small topic. As for malware the type of people going to catch malware are hardly likely to read a section devoted to it.

That sounds to me like a better idea.

Yes and yes. Malware tends to be self-inflicted, and is probably adequately covered in Windows community forums. lol!Even if Windows forums are covered in it.

of course it had to do with the power outage (again) I guess they have problems with Strom in Nuernburg . Anyways where else would you post an issue if the whole list is down ?

  • the broadcast , but that is something else

Post it on the forums since we were not effected by the power outage. If
the issue is not resolved by the time the list comes back up then post
to the mailing list.

It’s a good idea particularly to share security incidents and remediation. Information about some Suse specific topics can be shared there as well. AppArmor, for example.
