dns server fail to load zone

I have a DNS server with 3 zones
one is dynamic with an associated reverse and one is static
Everything was fine until I added a single host in the static
zone then the server stopped resolving names in that zone
The only way I could get it to work again was delete the whole zone and re enter the zone and hosts

Any ideas ??

Look in /var/log/messages to see what the problem was with the syntax.

It says ‘ignoring out of zone data’

but all I did was to add a host using Yast ???

Could be a YaST bug, not unknown. You’ll have to post the zone file for a look. Or at least tell us what host you tried to add. Remember not all characters are valid in a domain name. The one that surprises a lot of people is underscore. It’s not valid in a domain name. People think it should be because programming language identifiers allow it. The hyphen is valid in domain names though.

I had just built a joomla box to test so
I just went to the DNS box and using Yast added
a host called joomla ti the static zone

I have just done it again to see what would happen
and it worked fine

Hmmmm…

Have you run named-checkzone on the zone file for syntax errors?

named-checkzone {Zonename} {PathToZonefile}

See: man named-checkzone
