DL CDROM/DVD DRIVES

Does anyone have experience with the LG24 DL drive? I have some pretty large backups to do and 8 Gig looks just right. 11.2 installed with 11.3 on the way.

johmidl, you are in luck in that I own a couple of the LG 24 Dual Layer (my disks are +RDL @ 8.5 GB each, 2.4x rated) DVD burners and I feel they work very well AND they seem to have a good price. I am a BIG fan of LG devices these days and feel you can not do better in its price range. As for dual layer burns, I have mostly used them to make DVD movie copies and not data disks though I did burn the openSUSE 11.4 M6 to a DL disk after the released copy would not fit on a standard 4.7 GB DVD and it did work. So, the DL DVD’s work just fine, but do cost more than DVD’s. My main problem is that you need to make sure your target DVD players are all DL rated. That was not true several years ago, but most everything is DL rated these days. So, go for the LG24 DL burner without a doubt. Buy say a 25 pack DVD-DL collection and give the disks a try, but don’t commit it all without making some test data restores to see if it really does what you want. I would consider buying two drives and stick them in two separate computers, just to make sure you will be able to read your disks.

Thank You,
