divX on firefox with mplayer?

Hi guys,

hey guys im a n00b with openSUSE so please use general terms only.Anyway my question pertained to watching divX content on firefox. I searched it up on Google and found that using a player called mplayer should solve my issues. I went to Software.openSUSE.org and tried finding mplayer. Instead, I found ‘kmplayer’. Are both players the same and will both fit my needs? if not, how do i view divX content on opensuse 11.1. Also, how would I go about upgrading my firefox (currently version 3.0.4) to version 3.5?

Thanks in advace guys,
Arunabh

You need to add the mozilla repo from the community list for FF 3.5

Check you multi-media
Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide - openSUSE Forums

You may find with FF3.5 things will be better. But I use the vlc mozilla plugin
here is a post on it
opensuse 11.1 wmv in firefox - openSUSE Forums

Thanks for replying so fast!

The problem for me with Mozilla Firefox 3.5 is that I really dont know how to download repositories.

Your help greatly appreciated,
Arunabh

Sorry for double posting.

So as i was saying, i cant understand what the poster means here:

Additional Repositories You will need:

  1. Packman: Index of /packman/suse/11.1
  2. Videolan VLC: Index of /pub/vlc/SuSE/11.1/

N.B. You will install one package from VLC: libdvdcss – That’s it!! Then DISABLE this repo. Install this Package FIRST.

what do i need to disable? And what package?

thanks once again

B.T.W. I have KDE not GNOME though I dont know if it will make any difference

Repository Management - openSUSE Forums

see community section
ImageBam - Fast, Free Image Hosting and Photo Sharing

select mozilla
ImageBam - Fast, Free Image Hosting and Photo Sharing
(ignore what’s seleted in the pic)

OK

Then Open Software management
filter by repo
select mozilla and update all in the list

Thank you,

now since i am a completely new to linux of any sort, I have no idea of how to open the repositary URL screen shown here:

ImageBam - Fast, Free Image Hosting and Photo Sharing

thank you,
Arunabh

That pic is reached by ‘Add’
Yast - Software - Repositories

it’s all in the guide
Repository Management - openSUSE Forums

but you want Community

So if youd be kind enough to show me how to go to that screen.

sorry about my last message. it pertained to my message before the one I am referring to now lol. and im adding the mozilla repositary right now!

thanks

Thanks its working out so far.

i selected the openSUSE build service- mozilla and im ticking off each item in the list. it however says ‘MozillaFirefox-branding-upstream-3.0.11-0.1.1.i586 conflicts with namespace’…

and provides the options to deinstall the selected package or to not install the new one? what am i to do? i can either just cancel the error message and move on or go to expert options?

this is the conflicts.txt file it saved on my computer:

YaST2 conflicts list - generated 2009-07-22 17:09:30

MozillaFirefox-branding-upstream-3.0.11-0.1.1.i586 conflicts with namespace:otherproviders(MozillaFirefox-branding) provided by MozillaFirefox-branding-openSUSE-3.0.3-3.11.i586

 ] deinstallation of MozillaFirefox-branding-openSUSE-3.0.3-3.11.i586

 ] do not install MozillaFirefox-branding-upstream-3.0.11-0.1.1.i586

YaST2 conflicts list END

I’m guessing you are a gnome user? If by chance you are kde you can go to Software Management - Filter by Repo - Select Mozilla
Then from the top Menu select ‘Package’ and in the drop box do ‘Update all in this list Unconditionally’
That should just sort it.

Anyway, the answer to the conflict is
] do not install MozillaFirefox-branding-upstream-3.0.11-0.1.1.i586

Just to show you my installed mozilla

Once again,

Ive installed all the components from the link you gave me individually (not the one-click link) and i tried using divx. it didnt seen to work, the place where the player should have been has a white background and says missing pugins. i am going to try the 1 click link and see if it work. Any advice would be appreciated

Ive used the one click installation method and it still doesnt work!!!

Help please!

Look for and install: gnome-mplayer and gecko-mediaplayer

thanks,
Arunabh

gnome mplayer will work fine, it’s what you need. I’m a kde user too.
