I felt after finish of reading that author is not very objective.
The same attitude had during testing of rolling distributions on Distrowatch. OpenSuse Factory was the most problematic according him. But problematic was not Factory but him, because he was unable to correct update system.
He also still have problem with video codecs. He must always make special steps for their additional installation. I do not know why. I have never made any special steps for multimedia support on openSUSE.
What did you mean “manually”? Compiled it from source code?
Smplayer located just in that, above mentioned Packman repository, which needed to be add to “software sourses”. Then from there installation of Smplayer going on as well as subsequent installation of codecs. But those installed codecs is not end of story of multimedia in openSUSE. It’s end of story Smplayer functionality. Functionality other multimedia programs is a big question mark yet. Until? Until you do some things written in link I posted above.
and I do not have any problem with playing mp3, mp4, mkv and other various other files. It was sufficient only to add Packman repository, command zypper dist-upgrade and install Smplayer with dependencies.
That’s all
