Distributed Computing for Science

What do you guys think about these projects, I’ve began using my computer for crunching in 2003 I believe. It was seti@home and I was fascinated that normal home computers were used to help analyzing radio signals from space.
Meanwhile seti@home is running on a plattform called boinc which allows scientists to realize their projects more easily. Now I’m using my machine for a project called poem@home POEM@HOME

“By joining this project you will contribute to a computational approach to
predict the biologically active structure of proteins
understand the signal-processing mechanisms when the proteins interact with one another
understand diseases related to protein malfunction or aggregation
develop new drugs on the basis of the three-dimensions structure of biologically important proteins.

POEM@HOME is a purely academic, non-profit project to improve our understanding of biomolecular structure and function. All substantial result of POEM@HOME will be published in international peer reviewed journals with proper credit to the POEM@HOME volunteers.”

I think it’s a great project also a short while ago gpu support was added which increased the project productivity tremendously, check it out may be it’s something you’d like to join in.

i’m thinking about computer zombies

i’ll never install such a server…

I had an uneasy feeling from time to time in the beginning too but after several years I’ve never heared of any malicious attacks caused by using boinc but it’s a trust thing for sure.

BOINC Security - BOINC

I used to do SETI@Home many years ago. The last project like this I was active in was Folding@Home - Folding@home - Main

I crunched for it for some time too, I like these kind of biological projects. If you’ll ever feel like crunching again you can take a look at poem@home, it’s similar to folding@home.
