When I try play an audio file or video file the sound is distorted unless I bring the volume down to around 50% on the player. As a result I’m not getting much volume. It’s as though it’s being over boosted.
I’ve checked the configurations of the various players and set the amplification to 100% (they were set to 120%) but it’s still not helped much.
Is there another global setting somewhere that sets the amplification of the sound card?
OK, I’ll try those settings and see how I get on. The master volume was already set to 70% in Yast but PCM volume was at 100% so I reduced it too.
My Kmixer correlates directly to the volume buttons on my thinkpad and is usually set to 80%. For some reason my volume increments are not correct because below 70% I don’t hear anything - I posted about this problem separately.
Just an update. That seems to have done the trick with the distortion problem I think. I wish I could sort out the lack of volume range on my volume buttons.
Only way is to get a set of powered speakers with their own amplifier or a sound card with an amp. The sound output on most motherboards is very low. The multi output motherbards assume you have an expensive separate sound system set up and not just a cheap speaker.
