dissapointment after overwhelming exitement with YAST

I couldn’t wait at first to install and get my hands on opensuse 11.0 and after the install every looked great and my first step was to check out the supposingly improved package manager… So there I go click on computer and click on install software… As this was the fist time it was updating the repository and took 2h30min just to do that… After than tried installing gimp and the speed was really bad… it was only giving me 2% of average download speed… I don’t know if this is known issue but earlier today when I was hanging out in the suse irc a whole bunch of people complained about it too…

Is there a fix or a solution to this?

Sometimes, just waiting for a while before trying to update again helps. You can also configure yast to use mirrors:

Repositories - openSUSE-Community

Mirrors Released Version - openSUSE

i tried a couple times… between couple tries spent over 15 min but that didn’t seem to help…

but i’ll try the mirrors see if that changes anything

[nevermind…just a repeat about mirrors]

Blaming Yast for slow morrors is unfair IMHO.
Sometimes they are oveloaded sometimes not.
We cant have eveything can we?
Apart form the very first days that opensuse came out, when i had very big issues with slo download, never had an problem again!!!

i don’t seem to get the mirrors entered right… can you give me an exact link… i think i am chooising the wrong addresses…

i thought the new yast mirrored to the best location itself for some reason… and I have never experienced a decent speed in yast… i think smart package manager gave me a better speed in 10.0… but for now i can’t the mirrors to load… i think i am using the wrong addresses… i’d appreciate a link i can just copy paste

Go to Yast - Repositories
You should have at least oss, non-oss, updates
add url’s in there from the mirrors list

mine runs so fast it great

i have about 15 different repos on mine, and i usually get around 500+ kb/s on average. I have no complaints, Opensuse made me completely switch over to linux. i still have windows for my zune but i never boot it unless i have to.

OpenSuse 9/10.

My only issues are probably still noobie issues such as libs missing and not being able to make files etc because of the above.

I tried adding mirrors but it keeps giving me this error
“Download (curl) error for ‘http://ftp.free.fr/mirrors/ftp.opensuse.org/opensuse/distribution/11.0/repo/oss/license.tar.gz’:
Error code: User abort
Error message: Callback aborted”

Aslo I was wondering if I add the mirrors does it matter if the original repos are still in there or is recommended to turn them off?

OK. What exactly is wrong with the original repo’s you have
You describe it being slow, but that is strange. What kind of internet connection do you use?

And the mirror address you list is strange looking!!! It’s an archive

for example OSS is:
Index of /distribution/11.0/repo/oss
non-OSS is:
Index of /distribution/11.0/repo/non-oss
updates is:
Index of /update/11.0

add by url

No it doesn’t matter if the old ones are there, but disable refresh on them

My internet connecting here in congo isn’t too great but it downloads at 10Kbps avg… when downloading something from firefox it will still give me the right speed but when downloading something from yast it downloads at 97B/s or around there… less than 1Kpbs…

The repos you gave me up there are the ones in my repos list…

That internet is slow
expect it to take a while

Unless you really need stuff from outside repo’s why not just enable the dvd.

Updates needs the internet though
