Displaylink working, but only at 1k on 2k monitors

Recent install of Leap 15.6, kernel 6.4.0-150600

I have a Startech DK30CH2DPPDU dock (based on DL-6950) connected to HP Envy Laptop with displaylink 6.0.0 and evdi 1.14.4 both from OBS (HEBH and jtorres resp.). Hardware should support 2x monitors up to 4k .

The dock works perfectly, except in that it won’t allow me to select a resolution above 1k even though my monitors are 2k (2560 x 1440p). These work as expected when connected directly to my desktop PC.

Any suggestions on how to fix this most welcome please.

Hi @MQ … this Reply may not help, but I’ll toss it out here.

I have a custom built desktop running 15.6. I also have a laptop running Win10 only.

I have a Dell 38" curved monitor that offers “KVM” functionality, so I can switch between the two [disparate] PCs.

I discovered, to use the full resolution offered by the monitor with openSuse, I have to use the DPI port (cables).

For Win10 laptop, I use HDMI (the laptop is sitting on a dedicated docking station).

.
If required, I’ll get the exact hardware specs for monitor, desktop, and laptop.

Specs …

The laptop is a Thinkpad T480, also displaying at 3840x1600.

I have a slightly older than OP’s system with AMD A10-7850K Radeon R7 with Kaveri 1002:130f GCN#2 GPU on an ASrock FM2A88X Extreme6+ with 2016-01 BIOS and DP, HDMI, DVI & VGA outputs. I tried hooking up my Monoprice 24567 1X2 DisplayPort Splitter (MST) to its DP output and experienced only frustration similar to but worse than OP, getting black screen instead of 1K, both with 15.6 and TW20240712.

I moved the MST to a similarly featured, but much newer, Intel Rocket Lake PC, and both 15.6 and TW20240701 produced only expected results.

It turns out I filed a bug about my Kaveri about 18 months ago, and it looks like you’re experiencing basically the same problem

Thanks both for the suggestions. Since posting I’ve tested on a Lenovo laptop with win-10, and behaviour is exactly the same. So it is probably time to talk to Startech support.

It doesn’t look to be an opensuse problem.

SOLVED - indeed it was NOT an opensuse problem.

Posting the solution to help others - I was connecting the monitors via DP - DVI cables, and the single channel ones that I have only support up to 1K resolution. Replacing with proper DP - DP cables immediately upped the resolution to (at least) 2K. Wikipedia entry DisplayPort 1.3+ says they can drive 4K and beyond. According to the DVI entry the limit for dual channel DVI is 2560 x 1600.

As well as the fully supported MS Windows 10, it works fairly well in OSL 15.6 as long as I use Wayland, I get nothing with X11. I do see some strange issues, mainly after disconnecting, maybe worth a bug report with Displaylink. The worst one is loss of sound - the laptop sound card loses its configuration…
