Display went from wide screen to 2 copies of narrow

Setup: two monitors, with right one primary, left one aux; both 1920x1080, nVidia GTX 750Ti, latest 367.35 driver. Up to date, KDE.

When I logged into my system last night, it had gone from my normal wide screen setup to having both monitors showing the same view. I ran nvidia-settings, and found both monitors configured with the same origin (0+0). Reset them to ‘left of’ and absolute, wrote to xorg.conf, and rebooted - same behavior.

Looked into Xorg.0.log(copy here). Found that the mode was set correctly (at 35.090), but then set as overlapping (at 44.532).

Any ideas of what’s happening , and why it suddenly changed? Where do I look next?

Did you look at configure desktop settings? they take president

What part of desktop settings do you mean? The ‘Display and Monitor’ config only touches the screenlocker; am I missing something there? Although the multiscreen handling in the 42.1 versions of KDE is poor, I did have it working before.

I think the problem is back in X, as the log shows both screens have the same coordinates(?!?).

display configuration to setup multi monitor

The KDE setting over rides any xorg settings

OK, now I found it, and it’s back to normal. Still don’t know why this happened, though.

Sigh. How many times will I end up in systemsettings instead of systemsettings5 before it goes away entirely.

OK why not change the name so they can distinguished in the menu. The problem seems they get listed under the smae name in the menu.

As to when well that depends on when all the KDE4 stuff gets ported to 5 I guess

As to why probably an update in plasma 5 caused a reset to defaults for some reason
