Display problems

I havd installed openSUSE 11.3 64bit on a Toshiba Portege 64 bit, in dual boot with windows7. The install screens and the boot screens display fine up thru the grub screens, but when I select to boot into openSUSE, the display goes wacky. I tried repair and reinstall so may times and made so many changes, I eventually hosed the boot option for Windows 7. I repaired Windos 7 and removed openSUSE 11.3 64 bit.
Will the 32 bit version work on a 64 bit platform?

Yes. But before reinstalling, try appending “nomodeset” to the boot options.

I tried nomodeset from the grub screen with no effect.
I have experience with other distros, just had ubuntu running on the same platform from a jump drive.
Just going therough the beginners forum and found the advise to defrag before installing. I have repartitioned my hard drive. I will defrag the windows partition and try again. Do you recommend trying the 32 bit? Or installing from Live CD?

That’s true. But it has nothing to do with your display problem

It won’t help either. Totally unrelated.

Only if you have less than 2GB of RAM. But unlikely to make a difference.

I recommend to boot from live CD, type hwinfo --gfxcard and post the output here.

  • But that doesn’t mean that you should not defragment your Windows partition!
