Display Problems.. Need Help

I have installed Opensuse 11.1 on ma Acer 4520. i am getting only 1024 resolution… can’t get more than that which i used to get in my windows… Wat should i do? only 800 and 1024 is der in Yast.

Thanks in advance

EDIT: S/m specs

AMD Athlon 64x2
NVidida GeForce 7000M
1GB DDR2

Did you install the nvidia drivers
NVIDIA - openSUSE

yes i did. how do i confirm that it was installed completely? IN sax i see ma Nvidia Geforce 7000M written an monitor

In the Yast - Hardware - Monitor
Have you set the monitor. Mine is recognized OK. But many just have to use LCD—>
and then select the correct resolution

Here is my screen shot
http://thumbnails10.imagebam.com/3246/fc001032457054.gif](http://www.imagebam.com/image/fc001032457054/)

Something happened…
Now card is VESA framebuffer graphics, before it ws NVIDIA GEforce 7000M :frowning:

Monitor is LCD 1280x800@60Hz

How do i know which is ma monitor?

thanks for the quick reply

To start with, have a look at output of

cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf (to see driver and resolution settings etc)

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log (might give clues about any problems)

Sometimes, when sax2 configures monitor and resloution settings, things can still go wrong. As caf4926 mentioned, it is sometimes necessary to select a generic LCD monitor with the desired native resolution, rather than your actual model, as the EDID info does not always get reported (or interpreted) correctly. The settings in xorg.conf can get ignored unless autodetection is suppressed. A blog explaining this issue here.

How do you mean something happened? Just now, or were you surprised what you found in sax2?
There has been a kernel update, maybe this has caused the problem

maybe you need to open Software Management
search for kernel-source
check it to update if it’s version number is showing blue
now - Filter by repository
select Nvidia repo
then check the installed packages to re-install
accept

re-boot
and check the monitor again
My laptop is 1280x800 (15inch widescreen)

cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf

/…/

@deano
thanks…how do i knw which monitor to select?

@caf4926
yesterday wen i checked i saw NVIDIA Geforce 7000M, now its VESA framebuffer graphics.

I checked Yast-s/w management…
kerner-source’s version number ain’t blue…
and in NVIDIA repo, nothing is installed************************************************

I checked Yast-s/w management…

Then you will need to reinstall the nvidia drivers, making sure you select the correct version for your kernel.

In nvidia repo - software management check to add
x11-video-nvidiaG02-180

it should automatically add the correct kernel module too
accept.

Your xorg.conf shows you are using Vesa at the moment.

k, am downloading it… its abt 59MB… wat do i do after downloading it?

thanks

Logout and back in.
Go back and see what it say’s in Yast - Hardware - Monitor (sax2)

report back here

When i logged out, it lost the GUI and i was in konsole mode… wen i pressed ctrl+alt+f7, it was just a blank screen with a cursor blinking… i need to do ctrl+Alt+f1 to go to konsole mode to login

so now am in opensuse failsafe mode…

it doesn’t matter that you are in Failsafe. Go to the sax2 in Yast and see what you have.

We could do with seeing what the vga=??? is in the /boot/grub/menu.lst
on the default boot line.

It should have something like: vga=0x31a

When i check Yast now, its shows NVIDIA Geforce 7000M as Card
and monitor is LCD 1024x768@60Hz

Resolutions now i have 1280x720 and many more higher ones… last time i had only 1024 one

I’m not sure what the Trace boot is (maybe DF does?) - which is currently set as default. Don’t change this via Yast!

here is how your menu should be:

Don’t change the vga=0x317
It should be right for you I guess.

You didn’t post the entire content of your menu.lst
So remember the entire top section needs to be there too. I just juggled the trace boot to lower down the list.

I was wondering what you booted from earlier when it arrived at the CLI?
Probably Trace - which was set as default.

Hope this makes sense
Adjust your sax2 resolution to match your needs
You can keep trying different ones if you are not sure.

sorry
