My display keep going out then back on for no apparent reason.
I have no idea where to start figuring this out - all my updates are installed
SYSTEM:
OS: Linux 3.1.10-1.16-desktop x86_64
KDE: 4.7.2 (4.7.2) “release 5”
AMD Phenom™ II X6 1090T Processor
Speed: 3,200.00 MHz
Cores: 5
Vendor: ATI Technologies Inc
Model:
2D driver: radeon
3D driver: Unknown Gallium (7.11)
Total memory (RAM): 7.8 GiB
Free memory: 5.3 GiB (+ 1.2 GiB Caches)
Free swap: 2.0 GiB
I should clarify a little, the display is not actually turning on and off, it just stops displaying for a few seconds then starts displaying again.
Everything is fine in windows so its not a hardware issue.
I see a sticky above referring to legacy ATI drivers, although my card is a 68xx series, it seems to be affected by the new ATI driver update
I note that you’re using the open source radeon driver. Have you considered installing the proprietary driver?
One of our members has made the process easier with an installation script:
http://forums.opensuse.org/content/115-ati-driver-atiupgrade-new-version.html
I’m not having a lot of success with that

the only thing that cannot deal with " http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/amd-driver-installer-12-6-x86.x86_64.run " is yast and zypper - firefox has no problem navigating there and downloading the file
Now what?

Have you told yast/zypper to use a proxy? Check the configuration.

My apologies but I do not know enough about proxy, zypper or Linux to do as you suggest.
I don’t know why it doesn’t resolve for you. From a terminal, I executed
:~> wget http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/amd-driver-installer-12-6-x86.x86_64.run

Hi
Maybe the OP has a DNS issue, I get;
CODE}
Resolving www2.ati.com … 12.120.136.146"
Then for host, I get;
host www2.ati.com
www2.ati.com is an alias for wpc.658C.att-acdn.net .
wpc.658C.att-acdn.net has address 68.254.148.146

I get 32.58.174.146. They give different IPs based on who knows what.
coasterad, what do you get for ‘host www2.ati.com ’?

@coasterad : Try installing this way
[SDB:ATI drivers - openSUSE](http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:ATI_drivers)
bilbo@linux-barl:~> sudo host www2.ati.com
root's password:
www2.ati.com is an alias for wpc.658C.att-acdn.net.
wpc.658C.att-acdn.net has address 12.120.162.146
I am having some success with that but I still have to get zypper and yast to resolve www2.ati.com because every time I open yast or do zypper up, it hangs up my system
ok - those drivers are installed, I think, so now, back over to zypper error thread to get zypper and yast to resolve www2.ati.com
Display Info
Vendor: ATI Technologies Inc
Model:
2D driver: fglrx
3D driver:TI A
Has that helped with your display issue?
No, my display still has issues. but not all the time .
everything is fine now but if I must restart my PC, it may boot up with the display issue or, not - I hate it because it is not consistent.
ok, the screen blanking issues persist and frequency has increased - my screen blanks about every 5 seconds or so - very annoying
Also I have lost sound from firefox/you tube - hardware driver meltdown maybe?
Whatever is happening happens at boot up time - perhaps a driver is being loaded incorrectly or not at all.
Is there a way to refresh all drivers after boot up?
