Display cuts out intermittently

After installing the latest version of opensuse I have it up and running, except that the display goes black about every 30 seconds for a moment and then comes back again.

I am guessing it is because I don’t have enough ram for this OS? I am using a HP tower and I think it only has at most 512mb ram right now.

Can someone tell me if this is the issue or anything else I might try in the meantime?

Thanks

This isn’t be caused of RAM size, either in the video card or the CPU.

If you boot in safe mode do you have the same problem?

Is your monitor cable correctly connected? Does this happen with another monitor? Can you set another frequency in the video settings (i.e., change 60 Hz to 50 Hz or such, if available)?

It is more probably a video driver issue. What video card and driver are you using?

Read the stickies (like this) and guides (like that).

Good luck!

The issue is not present when I boot in safe mode.

It is not an issue with the cable. I only have 60hz refresh rate available.

solved it…

Added the nvidia repositories through yast>software repositories>add>community repositories

Installed nvidia driver for my card and it is fixed now.

Thanks

I was going to tell you to add ‘nomodeset’ to the boot line to prevent nouveau
from loading. That driver is very much a WIP. Usually it works or fails totally.
Yours is the first instance of an intermittent problem that I have seen.
