Discussion thread for 42.2 Beta 3

Leap 42.2 Beta 3 was released today: <https://news.opensuse.org/2016/10/05/beta-3-release-updates-firefox-kde-applications-virtualbox/>

This thread is for discussion.

13.2 and Leap 42.1 running on 64-bit AMD 4-Core CPUs with AMD Graphics
Leap 42.2 running in Oracle VirtualBox VMs

Performed a single partition (ext4) test install, with KDE. My family is gonna love it.

Hello Dear Sirs. As new to OpenSuse two days ago decided to try 42.1 and 42.2 Beta 2 especially for Plasma 5.8 to see how it works with Docking Station and Multi-Monitor configuration, which are painfull parts of KDE < 5.8 that force me sitting on Gnome. In 42.2 Beta 2 i comparing to 42.1 found that there is no VirtualBox package available from repository and there is missing community repository for nvidia drivers. Regarding VirtualBox is it safe to install official package destined for Leap 42.1 (“Malachite”) from http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/5.1.6/VirtualBox-5.1-5.1.6_110634_openSUSE132-1.x86_64.rpm? At which stage these two essential things are available through community repositories, RC or after release? Thank You in advance.

I installed beta 3 as a fresh install on my I7 Laptop today, keeping the home directory I used for beta1 & 2. All went well with no issues on that part.

The only issue I have is one with QT5 printing support which does not allow me to select ALL the valid paper sizes for my printer. I have reported this on Tumbleweed and have a bug open in bugzilla and even tried a thread on the KDE forums but nothing seems to be being done. The problem can be seen when printing from the kate editor or when using Digikam V5 (which I know is not part of Leap for some reason despite it being available for some time now). In fact I believe every application which uses QT 5 printing support will see this issue.

I will do some more testing of other areas later.

Stuart

My first install today was on a box with Nvidia graphics.

Plasmashell dumps core with nouveau graphics. Apart from that, installing went well.

I’ll try on another box (with Intel graphics) later today.

Hi, as the title of this thread implies, Beta3 was released today.
Please do a distribution upgrade (issue “zypper dup” in a superuser terminal) and get VirtualBox 5.1.4 from the updated repo.
Installing VBox from the upstream Oracle site is generally safe, but please be aware that 42.2 IS STILL BETA, so for testing only and not intended for production use.
For NVIDIA I already see the following up and running:
http://http.download.nvidia.com/opensuse/leap/42.2/
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/Bumblebee-Project:/nVidia:/370.28/openSUSE_Leap_42.2/

Happy testing!

I have now installed on a second box, with Intel graphics.

The install was fine. KDE comes up fine. However, it comes up with the folder-view background. I much prefer the default desktop background.

So I switched to the default desktop. And then I set a pleasing wallpaper.

Then I logged out, and logged back in. And it was back to the folder-view background with the default wallpaper. It seems that those settings won’t stick.

I should add: on first login to KDE (with no settings from a prior system – this was a clean install), the desktop never fully came up. I aborted with CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE. It came up properly on the second login.

Hi.

I made a fresh install of Beta 2, and today I made a zypper dup. After installing 885 package all went well.
But the kernel was updated too, but doing a uname -a I see that still use the old version. I check in YaST that it’s updated…
Don’t know what’s happening…

Did you reboot after the update?

clean install (ext4 for root and home) with net-install on older sony vaio laptop went very good.
no problems found in the install, desktop is plasma

For flash i went to adobe site, install OK.
https://get.adobe.com/nl/flashplayer/otherversions/

Notice that i didn’t have flash options after install, anyone knows why?

OK, drooped support
https://en.opensuse.org/Adobe_Flash_Player

Badly formed URL by the Forum software – should be: <https://en.opensuse.org/Adobe_Flash_Player>.
As indicated by the openSUSE Flash Player statement, with 42.1 simply add a repository pointing to this URL: <http://linuxdownload.adobe.com/linux/x86_64/>
There are indications that, the package is also available from the Packman repository.

Hi!

I DL flash-plugin-11.2.202.635-release.x86_64.rpm from adobe and its working for me in 42.2 beta3.

regards

Hi!
I tested om both a laptop and my main PC(used another hd). Everything I have seen and tested so fare is working except for one(two) thing(s):

I cant play *.mp3’s, neigher in Amarok or VLC. In VLC I got the error:

Codec not supported:
VLC could not decode the format “mpga” (MPEG Audio layer 1/2)

Did I miss something? Any advice is welcome

In the first zypper dup mp3 support seems to be added (I didn’t look to carefully) among other things. No extra repos is added.

I cant stream from the Swedish national radio ether, probably a similar connected problem. In flash-streaming from news sites on the net the sound working ok.

regards

As always you must get non open source codecs from packman.

of course many times!!
A screenshot that show what I mean…

Please upload your /boot/grub2/grub.cfg to http://susepaste.org

Hi Neil, I can confirm that the “Desktop” setting doesn’t stick, the “Folder view” kicks back on logout-login; I noticed that the “Desktop settings” applet apparently died just after clicking the “Apply” button.

Changing the background image shows no problem here though.
Should you file a bug I’ll be glad to join for testing.

I should add: on first login to KDE (with no settings from a prior system – this was a clean install), the desktop never fully came up. I aborted with CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE. It came up properly on the second login.

I cannot confirm that, first login as smooth as oil here; but I disabled autologin at install, maybe the culprit hides there?
Installed on my “All Intel” test laptop (see signature).

The magic word is “Fluendo” – since at least 13.2 . . .

Yes!
Do a " > zypper search fluendo" – in the Leap 42.2 Beta 3 “gstreamer-0_10-fluendo-mp3” should be installed by default . . .

NTP

The Leap 42.2 Beta 3 systemd stops the NTP Server Daemon after 8 minutes and 30 seconds.
Does anybody know why the systemd is suddenly doing this?
