Disappearing Applications

I am running a week old 11.3 install with KDE (no desktop effects), compiz, nvidia. Last night I was working away. I had Thundertbird, Firefox, and VMWare Workstation open. Maybe something else, but I don’t remember.

I was typing away. Maybe I hit something on the keyboard, but maybe not. All apps just disappeared, meaning that they’re windows were not open and were not minimized to the panel. I could open new windows, and I fire up a terminal and ran top, which showed that they were all running, just not visible.

Obviously, this is a Bad Thing. Does anyone have any suggestions how to debug? How to recover if it happens again? Thanks!

unless i am mistaken openSUSE 11.3 is born with TWO desktops, by
default…you can switch from one to the other with a click…i think
the apps you can’t see are right there on the other desktop…

look on your bar at the bottom (or wherever yours is, sides, top, you
can decide) and mouse over all the symbols there…i have one called
“Desktop Preview” and right next to that one named “Desktop 1” and
another “Desktop2”…if i’m working in Desktop 1, i can click and
land in Destop2…i think you were working in one and accidently
went to the other and couldn’t see your apps…maybe.

Thanks. Now I am confused more.

The virgin install had four desktops installed, and there was a desktop switcher in the panel to allow changing between them. I deleted that switcher from the panel when I installed compiz, because I prefer to just rotate the cube.

The thing is that I had at least three applications open at the time that things disappeared, they were spread over three separate desktops (sides of cube), and they all disappeared. The cube was empty, except for the panel at the bottom and the Trash widget I’ve got on the desktop.

One thing that they all had in common is that they all (I think) are GTK apps? Maybe KDE support for GTK crashed? I have no idea…

Got to thinking (and Googling). Maybe it is this (?):

sure sounds like you found the problem…

just for fun, you might try turning off desktop effects and see if the
problem goes away…if so, leave it off until the bug is fixed so you
can do whatever you do with your computer…

Well. I’m not much inclined to change the way I work for an extended period. If I can’t sort it out, I’ll just revert to my 11.2 installation, which was without problem this or really any other problem.

Hmmm. Having read the bug report above closely, I think that it’s not what I am experiencing. The report details GTK apps crashing. Mine were still running, just invisible. Further, that bug is supposedly fixed. Since this is not a persistent problem, nor is it reproducible, I guess what I would like to know is: how can a I get an app that is running invisibly back on the desktop? Possible? Of course, any further suggestions on debugging would be great!

have you tried turning off desktop effects and/or compiz yet?
