disable disabling wireless from my notebook (laptop)

Hi,

I’ve bought an Acer Aspire 5810T(imeline),I notice after installation of opensuse 11.2 that network-manager has been installed by default probably because my laptop computer is containing a wireless device.

I only want my computer using ethernet (with the cable) and so want to know which methods exist to shut down as securely as possible wireless to avoid any missuse activity

Is there any possibility to shutdown traffic by locking with a password?
Thank’s for your suggestions!

PS: I do not have any wifi relay or antenna at home but want to avoid any relay in my neighbourhood from getting into my computer…

Add whatever driver your wireless device uses to the blacklist file
/etc/modprobe.d/50-blacklist.conf (11.2) or /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf (for
11.1 and earlieer).

When you post a question, uou really should give more information.

If you’re using the machine at home only, you might as well disable the Networkmanager and have networking arranged in the traditional method (ifup). This can be done in the Yast - Network Settings.
This way the networkmanager won’t even start, connection will be established during boottime. If you don’t manage, get back here and we’ll help you through.

Does this mean I have to start Yast2, go to “network devices” and click on "network configurations:
A warning window appears with content (traduced from german):
“The network is actually driven by the Network Manager,- its’ configuring cannot be overtaken through Yast.
To overtake network configuration please use the connection assistant of Network Manager or switch to traditional network configuring method with “ifup”.”
Then click on “OK” on that warning.
Under the so appearing new window (Network configuration window (traduced from german)) go to the first tab “Global options”, under “Method for recovering the network” choose “traditional method with ifup” …

…and that’s it?

Would this mean the evil waves from the neighbourhoods’ antennas won’t be able to find any path trought and into this notebook anymore potentially provocating bad things?
Would this mean "Network Manager disabled = wireless disabled?

I don’t really understand what you want, are you thinking about removing the wireless module from the kernel?
May you tell me the reason I should add the driver of my wireless device to the black list file, is my driver type bad? or unknown? What did you anticipate? Sorry for my little knowledge about this…

If you switch to ifup, it will disable NetworkManager.

He means that if you “Blacklist” the driver, it can never load.

Nope, but if you don’t configure it, i.e. delete any configuration in Yast for the wireless card, it will not connect. Not from the outside, not from the inside. So no roaming hackers that can use it either if that’s what you mean.

Iwfingers idea sounds very good, I’ll try to resolve by even this manner,
Let me some time I’ll post how to proceed when I 'll have taken a look at documentation also when there’s no other problem.

Fine dreams!

By making a blacklist entry, you will prevent the driver from ever loading. That
way, nothing will ever happen with wireless. I thought that was what you wanted.
I have no idea if your wireless driver is good or bad. You never told us what
device you have, or even which version of openSUSE you are using.

Just simply disable it in BIOS.

Wifi cards are normally easy to remove from the mainboard.

Just take it out lol!

Still, disabling from BIOS is easier

I do it now and then to save battery.
I have the webcam always disabled for the same reason.
