Digital Camera Woes

Last time i used my camera on a wedding and it was dark. Now i know
that my old digicam can not shoot well in low light, but that shot were
talking really long. It felt it never actually focused.
My question, and that may seem silly, can a digicam actually degrade? I
tried with flash (either shot on something and the rest was dark or it
took forever to shoot at all) and without which absolutely garbage.
Well camera is now 5 or 6 years old, maybe its time to retire it.

Your question is misleading due to your language skills.

I think you are actually asking if a Digital Camera can, over time, degrade in it’s physical ability to work.

As it is, this question ‘digicam woes’ appears to be a poor spelling of Digikam for kDE.
(I’ll alter the title a little)

I’ve experienced some mechanical degradation with a digital camera. My partner’s Nikon Coolpix struggles to focus shots under some low light conditions now (much to her dismay).

Sure, like any other electronic gadget, it can go out of order. Why would you think it would last forever?

One can always wish ! … I’m still using the 10+ year old PC that my wife and I purchased in either late 2000 or early 2001 (it first had SuSE-Pro-7.3 and it now has openSUSE-12.1 on it). It just won’t die !

But I keep losing my digital cameras (or dropping and breaking them) every few years … and my wife accuses me of doing so deliberately ! … Maybe an unintentional subconscious Freudian move on my part , as its not an intentional activity, although I do buy newer and better replacement digital cameras each time. … hmm … my old Canon Ixus 800IS is starting to look very old !

One way I gauge the reliability of digicam brands is to do a search on eBay and note the brand of those cameras that are offered for repair or for parts only.

Also people like to dunk them in water, get sand on them, drop them, etc. None of those things are conducive to their life.

Mm… you know i would understand if a mechanical part fails or doesn’t
work as it used to, but i thought electronic parts would actually last,
well maybe not forever but still work as they did before.
I have a Canon SD400 and it never broke (made in Japan if that means
anything).
Just from a feature point of view i think the camera is well beyond
current and i notice the noice more than i used to. Plus i don’t get
really sharp pictures anymore.

Btw. is the Canon Is130 any good? I just look for something better and
faster, especially in low light but not to expensive.

@caf now i outed myself again. I am in shame but would like to know why
it was wrong. maybe mail me for that since i like to learn

Thanks for the input to everyone.

at cnet Canon IXUS 130 IS Review - watch CNET’s video review - Digital Compact Cameras they say, that if in doubt, then go for the ls120. I have a Panasonic Lumix DMC FH1 and it is worth every cent. Its also not too expensive.

Thanks Steffen. I think if i had the money i would go for the more
expensive version. But then again, i don’t do much really. For some
occasion i like a good camera. How do actually these regargebale
batteries compare to the lithium kind? Just from experience. My lithium
for the elph is essentially gone. It does hold the charge for about 5
hours and then its charging time. The battery is as old as the camera i
have.
From Panasonic i hear so many different things. I know at the time i
worked at fry’s (oh my) that they were coming back really quick. But
that can also be for a different reason than quality. I will look into
that model as well.
