Ive been using openSuSe since its 11.1 release, and also Ubuntu since the 8.04 version. With time, openSuSe became more and more responsive and feature rich, and now Im using openSuSe 11.4 M5, on a production machine, and its very stable. I love it!
I`m very dissapointed with Ubuntu 10.10, and with all the releases, so I want to use only openSuSe. openSuSe became better with time, Ubuntu got worse…
The problem is that its so difficult to install multimedia apps, like Cinelerra, PiTiVi, Avidemux, OpenShot, Kino, etc etc... Ubuntu has most of them in its repository, or is very easy to install it through PPA`s.
I want to use these multimedia apps, but I need to switch to Ubuntu in order to use them, because I cannot (I`m not able to) install them under openSuSe 11.4.
Why its so difficult? Please include some of the multimedia programs in the main repository... in order to be easy for newcommers to install them, and not to leave openSuSe for this reason, otherwise its a pitty! Video editing is important…
Hi premamotion. Actually, its incredibly easy to install all those apps in openSUSE. But there is a ‘trick’ which is you NEED to keep your repository list as simple as possible (where repositories are the file servers in which openSUSE rpms are kept on the internet). Restrict your repositories to these 4 and only these 4 :
OSS
The main official repository, open source software only
non-OSS
The Non free (as in freedom) software official repos, with rpms such as Flashplayer, Java, Opera, IPW-firmware, … etc
Update
The official Repository for official security and bugfix updates for both OSS and Non-OSS
packman
The largest 3rd party unofficial repository with lots and lots and lots and lots (did I say lots ?? ) of multimedia rpms
The 1st 3 should already be setup. You can add Packman by going to YaST > Software > Software Repositories (see guide here: SDB:Add package repositories - openSUSE ).
Again, for now, ONLY those 4. Just those 4. No others. If you have others then disable them now ! You can add others ONLY after you sort this !! and when you understand better the risks/complexities.
Once those 4 are in place, go to YaST > Software > Software Management and search for and install the application you want. The ones you mention are all there.
Reference applications not yet in 11.4 Milestone (factory) section for Packman, the following HOW-TO may be of help: openSUSE software installation hints
… sometimes for a Milestone release, where one plans to completely replace the milestone release in the future, one can get away with using the previous openSUSE version rpms (where ‘sometimes’ is the operative word). ie. “sometimes” for 11.4 M5 one ‘might’ succeed with an 11.3 version. Typically for a milestone (such as 11.4 M5) I will use the Packman factory version, and I will try to rebuild the rpm from the Packman 11.3 source on my 11.4 M5. That can be quick, or it can take a long time, or simply not be within my technical ability. It all depends.
