Different widgets for each desktop

Hi,

When I go to configure KDE4 applications then to workspace behavior then to virtual desktops. The option of having different widgets for each desktop is greyed out. I cannot use it for some reason.
I am running Tumbleweed (with latest updates).

How can I fix this problem?

You are using Plasma 5.
“Configure KDE 4 applications” does not support Plasma5, the settings will be ignored anyway.

How can I fix this problem?

You can’t.
There is no problem to fix.

Oh, and Plasma 5 does not have that option. It does not support different widgets on different desktops.
Use different activities instead (which that option implicitly did in KDE4).

The KDE developers in all their wisdom have not implemented and plan to drop different widgets on different virtual desktops. Please complain on the KDE mailing list/boards

So the option of having different widgets on each desktop is/was removed?
Why did they remove it though?

Thank you for your help,

They plead that it is hard to do because of changes in the video stack. But they made the same excuses for the early KDE 4 releases. My personal opinion is that someone thinks Activity are better then virtual desktops and have been pushing them since early KDE4. In the early releases of KDE 4 Activities were totally broken So they fixed Virtual Desktops.

They don’t seem to realize that activities though useful are awkward and that the synergy of activities with fully functioning Virtual desktops is amazing. Now they have broken it again.

Example: A manager manages several complex projects Each project has sub projects. So they set up an activity for each main project and in each activity the sub projects on virtual desktops Each sub project requires a different set of tools and thus require a different set of widgets. No other Desktop allows this degree of organization except KDE4 now they have broken it. :X

As “gogalthorp” says, the KDE developers plan to drop different widgets on different virtual desktops. They have also dropped the feature of having different wallpapers on different desktops. There is quite a long thread about this in KDE Bugzilla: [plasmashell] [Bug 341143] “Wallpaper on every desktop is gone”, So you could have your say there. Personally (like quite a few others) I think that both these features are much better than the “Activities”. However I have found that I can have different wallpapers on each desktop in XFCE.

Off topic, yeah it is a nice xfce feature, you can even extend the wallpaper across all monitors if you have more than one,
including the panel. Oh there is a wallpaper changer also.

No, they don’t plan to drop that feature, they already dropped it in Plasma5 which has been released over a year ago. And they don’t plan to re-implement it either for technical reasons. Which doesn’t mean that somebody else could do it and submit a patch (this is open source after all). Although it might get rejected for technical reasons as well.

They have also dropped the feature of having different wallpapers on different desktops.

This was never “dropped”, it just never was implemented in Plasma (also in KDE4).
There’s only one wallpaper per activity.

In KDE4 at some point the above-mentioned feature of “different widgets on different virtual desktops” was added to workaround it (which implicitly uses a different activity for each virtual desktop).

Seperate wallpapers per virtual desktop might get re-implemented in Plasma5 though.

In Plasma 5.5 there’s a new “activity pager”, that allows to switch between activities (and move windows between them) like the old virtual desktop pager does. It’s just not activated by default but you can add it to the panel if you want.
